Can you tell the sex at a 12 week scan?

We made the midwife try and find something and there was a white dot between the legs when she went in from that angle and my DH is convinced he is getting a boy - the midwife didn't want to make a judgement call but said if she had to she'd veer towards a boy but it was clearly just a white dot?

Anyone had a similar experience and can a dot be either??!

At 12 weeks, they can give you a 70% guess, ime - there aren't genitals yet, just a genital bud. They can tell a lot better at 20 weeks.

at 12 weeks it is very difficult to tell...... i would not get too excited....16 weeks is sort of aroudn the time you can start to get a clear idea! and at 20 weeks...mistakes still get made.......would expect a very experienced sonograpgher might be able to give an inkling earlier.....!

I was geared up for a girl, i have a 2yr old girl and was convinced i'd have another and even chose her name so to say i was shocked by the suggestion was an understatement. i think i'd convinced my dh of a girl also and we were obviously happy with this but a boy would be an interesting dynamic, i've only ever had sisters and female cousins so i'll wait until the next scan until i start trying to digest it all!!

I just had my 12 week scan yesterday and the sonographer (who was awesome buy the way, considering she had me there for an hour doing the Nuchal Screening) offered to look. She said that it is difficult to tell because at that time the clitoris and penis are difficult to differentiate. She said that most people don't think of a clitoris as an external body part, but technically it is. Anyway, she said that it depends on the angle. If it lays flat it is a girl and if it "points north" it's a boy. She said that the science isn't quite there yet, but they are working on being able to differentiate.

Buy the way, according to her it's a girl!!

Like lulu said it depends on the sonographer. The other ones I've had have been in a hurry to get me out (have had two previous scans in this pregnancy).

This one was really interested in making sure I saw the baby do everything, and understood what was happening. She told me so much that I didn't know. She explained that everytime I took a deep breath the baby hiccupped, which was cute to see. She explained why hiccupping was good in utero, she explained why drinking amniotic fluid was important. She also explained why my uterus was contracting. She likened it to bumper cars. The uterus doesn't want the baby to get to comfortable in one spot so to keep the baby moving around it contracts and "bumps" it away. I have to say that with all the doctors, sonographers, and midwives I've seen in two pregnancies, this was by far the most informative, and the nicest person.

Sorry to ramble, but I think there should be more people like that. I think that someone else wouldn't have bothered to look at so much, and wouldn't have tried to differentiate the sex, because most don't care.

that is fantastic MKG....in the UK , you would not get an hour for a 12 week scan unless you were paying for it!! 20 weeks scan is the big one!!! how fab to get so much wonderful and reassuring information....

rainbowgirl · 14/11/2006 23:04

the difference between my private scan at 13 weeks and the NHS one at 20 weeks was remarkable and not in a good way. the 20 week scan was really quite a depressing experience and not just because she said 'the placenta is low' and then refused any other comment leaving me to go look it up on the net and panic .. grrrrr

MKG · 14/11/2006 23:05

I do have to say that she couldn't get the baby in the right position. Since they had drawn my blood she had to get the picture yesterday. AFter 45 minutes she moved the handle part, and said no wonder, you're bladders full. She told me go pee so the baby had more room to move. When I got back we got the baby in right position. She told me that babies are super smart and because it felt pressure from my bladder and pressure from her doing the scan it was hiding in a corner. She told me that these little ones know when something isn't right and they try to avoid it.
It made me feel more like I had a little person with its own personality.
She was great. She had pictures that she's collected of other babies on her wall. It made me feel like she really cares about her job.

Lulu, I have to add that before she told me what she thought it was I told her that I've dreamt it was a girl even before I was pregnant. When she saw that it's likely to be a girl we both got a "creepy" look.

Now watch, In two months she'll tell me it's a boy. LOL

rainbowgirl · 14/11/2006 23:10

i reckon those 'feelings' are usually right...

rainbowgirl · 14/11/2006 23:10

i definitely knew this one was a boy.. right from the start...

lulumama · 14/11/2006 23:11

MKG...when pregnant with DD....i had a dream i was having a blonde haired, blue eyed boy...( we are all dark hair & dark eyes)..said , that is not my baby...

the next night i dreamt of a dark eyed, dark haired girl, and that's waht i had!!! i knew she was mine!

Also, DD hated the sonicaid..and would hide from it when i went to the midwife.....!

Rainbow...do you have more info now re your placenta ...?

rainbowgirl · 14/11/2006 23:27

yes lulumama thank u xx

lulumama · 14/11/2006 23:30

good !

MKG · 14/11/2006 23:31

rainbowgirl,

Wanna hear something really freaky. MY sil had a dream once that we had two boys playing together. That was six months before I got pregnant. Wouldn't you know 4 months later she got pregnant. (Extra lucky because she was just coming off of hormones for her endometriosis and six months after her laproscopy)

Well we both have boys. Except my ds doesn't like hers very much. At ds' first birthday my dh asked her if she's had any more dreams, and she said yes, that I was going to have a girl. Well dh is now 15 months, and if she's right again I am going to tell her to join the psychic friends network.

lulumama · 14/11/2006 23:32

when my sister was pregnant....the day after she had done her test..i saw her,,i said, you are pregnant and you are having a boy...and she was and she did..

i should definitely join psychic network! LOL

lulumama · 14/11/2006 23:32

obviously, before she told me her news!!!

rainbowgirl · 14/11/2006 23:43

ooooooo LM so tell me.. what does the next year have in store for me?

lulumama · 14/11/2006 23:44

erm...you'll have a baby ..possibly a boy....! LOL

peacemakerukuk · 15/11/2006 14:26

or a girl

Iklboo · 15/11/2006 14:28

I knew I was having a boy right from the start too. I kept dreaming about having & holding a baby boy, called the bump "he" all the time

Emmalou1985 · 23/11/2021 14:20

Cud any one tell if my scan is boy or girl??

Can you tell the sex at a 12 week scan?
Sleeplessem · 23/11/2021 23:17

I saw fetal med at 12 weeks and the consultant said he could say with about 90% accuracy at 12 weeks if boy or girl. He said girl, he was right. NIPT test confirmed it a few days later
