wedding ring test - Anyone done this?!

Would love to hear your stories!

I've tried it on 4 friends and it's been correct each time (!) despite the distinct lack of scientific grounds...!

We did it on my bump this evening using my friend's wedding ring, and now I'm even more interested...

The wedding ring test: holding a wedding ring on a length of cotton above your bump & seeing which way it swings: like a pendulum is supposed to mean a boy. In a circle for a girl. (Someone else is supposed to hold it!)

Tbh I think that anyone who does this in a serious way really isn't mature enough to have a baby.

Goodness sake.....Tallulah its just a bit of fun! I'm 36 and 33 weeks with dc2. My son is 9 & would consider doing this for some fun. Does that make me immature!

What sort of stories are you expecting?

Surely they'll be either "I did the wedding ring test and happened to have what it predicted" or "I did the wedding ring test and got the opposite of what it predicted"?

I did this with DD. oddly, when I thought about it spinning one way, that is the way it spun. When I thought about it spinning the other way, it switched.

Clearly it is utter nonsense or I am telekinetic.

I imagine that small, unconscious movements of my hand made it move.

Did it always go in a circle Soupdragon, or lengthways when you thought that way? Yes I think your intentions probably have a lot to do with it (as per idiomotor affect)

I tried this the other morning for a giggle - DH wondered what on earth i was doing. I got pendulum one moment and circle rhe next -i've only one baby in there!
But then didn't know someone else was meant to hold the chain - i'll try it again! Think it may have been as Soupdragon suggested -you subconsciously control the movement.

PS. Good harmlessly fun thread for us women to wind down the day with.

I find it hilarious that you post a harmless lighthearted comment and someone questions your maturity to be a mother!? . This forum has some of the most bitchy sad people I've ever come across!

I haven't attempted this theory Tigger but may do this evening and let you know!

I just used it as a shameless excuse to nah OH that, whilst we're not getting married as neither of us are that fussed by 37, nonetheless he has to buy me a nice engagement ring. Naturally his opinion of it was therefore somewhere up there with tallulah's... Only slightly more politely put!

Friends have done it and most got it wrong, but I also agree totally unconscious bias has something to with it.

Tigger, I am only 8 weeks so probably a bit early....But as soon as there any bump to speak of I will certainly be trying it! I have one boy and would like another...I will find out via the Harmony test and let you know if the ring test was right!

(Btw I am nearly 40 so if I am not mature enough for a child now it's a bit of a worry).

I had the ring test done by dh nan at about 20 weeks, she claims to have never been wrong over the last 40 years or so!!
The ring test said we were having a girl, a week later we had our 20 week scan in which we were told the baby is a boy!

We haven't told the rest of the family what we are having as she is proudly telling everyone the baby will be a girl!!

Everyone knows it isn't scientifically proven to be correct, but sometimes a scan can be wrong too, harmless fun has never hurt anyone

You can do it well before you are pregnant- over palm of your hand.
I did it about a year ago - it showed that I will have a boy and a girl. I already have a son and had no intentions whatsoever to have another child. Anyway, I thought what does a silly ring know - it's just abit of fun that's all.
Guess what.. I am 18 week pregnant with my second child - I will find in 2 weeks if it's really a girl.. :)

Yes things like this are all about what you do with your hand, without thinking about it. Obviously the ring doesn't know anything. But doing the test might somehow tap into your subconscious thoughts about whether you're having a boy or a girl, and maybe it's possible that this is something some women can sense, without realising it (different hormones etc) so doing the ring test could "reveal" that. Plus there are all the people who do know what they're having but haven't said.

So IMO it's perfectly possible for the test to be right more often than not, without there being anything woo about it.

this is certainly true of Ouija boards - as a teenager my friend and I went through a real phase of this. I swear blind that neither of us were pushing it; that glass was rocketing around the board and spelling out some really random things. but at the same time, I never did believe that there was anything spiritual about it. when I read about the ideomotor thing years later, it was like a lightbulb going off.

but the wedding ring thing for predicting a baby's sex is purely a bit of fun, like any of the old wives tales. no need to piss on those chips in my opinion!
