I am 8 weeks pregnant with second after trying for ages. For the last week or so I have had a sort of muddy coloured mucus discharge (sounds and is horrible - sorry). No nasty smell or anything. Can't see any 'blood' to speak of. Appears intermittently and not every day.
I used to spot a lot during my uneven menstrual cycles - could it be something to do wwith that?? I feel sick as a dog most of the time and am sore in all the right places, but never had this mucus with ds1. Got period type cramps - but not that bad and lots of the normal tweaks and cramps I had last time. Went for a long walk with family the other day and there was more discharge that usual. Have convinced myself I have cervical erosion or something! Is it just normal pregnancy stuff as the cervix swells etc etc??

Can anyone put my mind at rest and reassure me nothing horrible is happening??! I am not yet booked in with a midwife and don't find my GP particularly helpful. Thankyou

Padme, this happened to me with dd - at about 8 weeks I had a few days of this and it went from muddy to black and then stopped and she was fine. Have also had similar with mcs (but don't want to upset you). I'd go for a scan. Here I need to get referral from GP but you may be ablejust to turn up. Very best of luck. I am rooting for you. Am 7 weeks pg myself adn kind of expecting something similar. Do let me know how you get on.

I think that it's quite common to experience this sort of thing ( I know that I did with both my pregnancies). However, I think you should try to see someone to put your mind a rest- is there a different GP at the surgery that you could see?

I had this at 8 weeks. I did go to the hospital (wasn't booked in either so I did have to wait a while to be seen, but my doctor told me to go to hospital - I don't think GPs have either the knowledge or the euqipment to diagnose properly) and had an examination and scan. Doctor thought it was probably cervical erosion as you say, which I think is very common. However having the scan and seeing baby was OK was very reassuring.
Unless you get brightred bleeding it's unlikely to be a serious problem, but worth checking out.
I'm 27 weeks and all is well now so try not to worry too much.

thanks all for your reassuring messages. I am seeing consultant tomorrow for a scan. I hope it is nothing, but Sponge, if it is cervical erosion - what does that mean?? does everything go back to normal or are there implications beyond pregnancy??

A friend had something similar with both pregancies and it turned out to be a urine infection which a course of antibiotics cleared up. Both pregancies/babies were fine.

Well, saw consultant today (who is wonderful) and the baby is fine - now looks like a piece of root ginger at 8 wks + 5 and Isaw the head and limb buds and it even did some wiggling for me - phew! The mucus/blood stuff he reckons is just a by product of the placenta burrowing deeper into the lining of the womb as it enlarges and irritating some of the hundreds of cappillaries there. He certainly was not worried at all and said that my cervix etc looked perfectly normal. He took a swab to check for any infection just in case.
I also have been having some pain on my right side and the area is tender to touch. The scan revealed that my right ovary is enlarged due to the corpus luteum - but enlarged more that normal. Again, he did not seem overly concerned as he has apparently seen bigger ovaries at this stage and I had ovarian pain at the beginning of my last pregnancy. Basically, he said I was as good as I could be at this stage but to slow down for a week or so until the ovarian pain had got better and not charge around with my 18mnth old ds if I could help it ( right!) so am off to Mum's for some R&R.
Am so relieved the baby is ok and just hope the discharge stops soon. Thanks for all your messages.

That is good news. I have had bouts of bleedding in my pregnancies and it is so terrifying, only a scan will alleviate the fears.

Padme, I am SO pleased for you. In my post I said I was 7 weeks pg and kind of expecting the same. Well, I have the same now and am hoping for a scan asap. The hospital are trying to contact me ...It was so pleassaing to hear your news. So sorry if I worried you with thought of mc. I felt I could not just say it would all be ok if I was not sure.

sponge · 06/05/2004 16:58

Good to hear all is OK Padme. You put your feet up.
I know cervical erosion sounds ghastly - like something eating it away! - but it just meant that there was extra blood at the surface due to hormonal changes.
All settled down now and does not have implications after pg.
