Second hand car seat

I'm pregnant with our first baby. My sister has given me her Silver Cross pram/travel system thing. So it has the car seat that also fits to the pram chassis. The whole set is 6yrs old and in vgc. Is it ok to have a second hand seat? It hasnt been dropped or in any accidents.

If you know the source and that it has not been bumped/crashed then the risk is lower. However, they do have an expiry date, after which they may not perform as well in a crash. As it is 6 yrs old you need to check. Also, I have a feeling the regs may have changed in the last 6 yrs, so more recent seats have better side impact protection? Old ones still legal, but newer ones safer. Again, worth checking.
