Varicose Vein Horror

I went away in half term and we took a coach tour. On the way back I was breast feeding my DD and I was in an uncorfatble position with a wedgie and my knickers were cutting in but I could not move as DD fell asleep, DS was asleep on my shoulder and I was on a coach.

When we got back to the hotel I had a chaffed area on the front of my thigh/groin where my knickers were cutting in. Today I went swimming and I now have what appears to be a grosteque varicose vein in the same spot.

Tell me this will vanish after the baby comes? Or have I caused myself permanant damage

Sorry I can't help you on this one but I thought I'd bump it for you.

lulumama · 11/11/2006 21:25

varicose veins do appear in pregnancy...and don;t tend to go away after...as far as i know..i might be wrong...

.they appear in the legs and groin area...

you haven't caused it.....it is just one of those things...it is not because of the way you were sitting.....

how many weeks are you?

lulumama · 11/11/2006 21:28

to try and prevent further ones:

exercise the calf muscles...if sitting or standing for long periods , try and move if possible....

support tights can help

avoid constipation - piles are varicose veins !!!

sorry...not much comfort...xxx

I had vulval varicose veins when pregnant with dd2and they looked like purple/bluish worms and they aint nice and hurt like hell but they do go afterwards.I used to have visions of my fanjo looking horrific afterwards but it looked fine.

lulumama · 11/11/2006 21:33

this thread should help, westcountrylass!

Snowstorm · 11/11/2006 21:40

The varicose veins that I got in my groin/fanjo, when I was pregnant with DD2, went away pretty much straight away after giving birth. The ones down the front of my thighs and backs of my calves didn't ... needless to say that I now wear either trousers or darkish tights!

lulumama · 11/11/2006 21:41

vulval ones do go!! love the word fanjo.........

Snowstorm · 11/11/2006 21:59

Don't use the word (fanjo) in RL ... mind you I don't go around talking about it much, that's probably why ... but I didn't know what else to call it and it does seem to be a MN kind of word

lulumama · 11/11/2006 22:06

me too....! not a one for discussing my fanjo generally..but if i did..i'd call it a fanjo!!

PrettyCandles · 11/11/2006 22:12

The fanjo ones do go after giving birth (leaving your bits as wrinkly as an old man's sack - but they do shrink and tighten up again eventually).

I found it helpful to put a little Canesten on them to ease the irritation. Sitting on a cushion eased the horrible 'falling out' sensation I got when they were particularly swollen.

I had one too. It appeared every pg and then disappeared afterwards. Mine was in a funny position, and they monitored it during labour because they said it might rupture (bleurgh) but it was fine.

The joys of pregnancy!?

Snowstorm · 11/11/2006 22:34

I Googled vulval varicose veins when I got mine and somehow or other ended up on a kind of mid-wives chat site. Apparently all mothers-to-be with vulval vein problems are (quite understandably) absolutely terrified of their veins "errupting" (if that's the right word) during labour but apparently it's very, very rare ... in fact none of them had ever known it.

Hope that's a comforting thought to someone out there

WestCountryLass · 11/11/2006 22:41

I'm 20 weeks, 3rd baby. I am hopeful that it might now go down now, thank you, if not then I am not likely to be strutting my stuff in a leotard a la Madonna any time soon. But it does look ghastly, I will have to buy swimsuits with legs!

What about a maternity wetsuit (if there isn't one then please feel free to go ahead and patent one, I will not be coming after you for my share of the money)?
