Newborns don't play with anything.

They need to be held and fed and kept warm and loved.
They actually need very little gear.

You won't need anything to start with. We got a load of Lamaze toys when our baby was born as gifts and they're really nice.

Newborns have a limited sight range for a bit so can't see much more further than from your boob to your face. They don't need toys. I wouldn't waste your money.

Newborns don't play with anything. They don't have the coordination. For the first few weeks they will just follow stuff with their eyes, look at bright contrast colours or black and white contrast, watch a mobile above a crib etc. Mostly they just want to be held.

A baby gym, a cot mobile, maybe one of those star projector things, and a comfy sling for you are the best bets if you want to spend money.

Agree with above, though.. They do like watching things flashing, lights, moving etc
