Falling risk of mc?

Hi, I've heard that as each passing week goes the risk of mc falls. I'm 6 weeks today and wondered what the % of risk is (if that makes sense?). Does anyone know?

there are some numbers here: sites.google.com/site/miscarriageresearch/miscarriage-general

Taken from the Miscarriage Association website.

Research has shown that if you see a heartbeat at 6 weeks of pregnancy, the chances of the pregnancy continuing are 78%.

A heartbeat at 8 weeks increases the chance of a continuing pregnancy to 98% and at 10 weeks that goes up to 99.4%.

I have been trying to look into this too. It's difficult because a lot of the statistics I've found are based on early scans when a heartbeat is detected. From what I can work out, and based also on what my dr said, I think at around 6 weeks the risk is 20% but then falls to around 10% by 8 weeks. That must seem high for you at the moment but please try not to worry. At 9+4 with my first I'm still worrying, I don't think it will go away, but I'm trying to keep calm as the days pass.

Thank you everyone. I'm planning to have an 8 week scan and I'd like to tell my family afterwards if all is well. I took a positive test two weeks ago and so far it feels like the longest two weeks of my life! Haha

Falling risk of mc?

Mrs Fazruns,

I've read the papers that that website apparently bases its data on - I'm not sure how the author of those figures could have come up with them as the studies weren't collecting that data as far as I could tell. I saw that too and was initially pleasantly cheered up, but I'd take them with a pinch of salt. I could be wrong, but what I read was enough to leave me sceptical.

The first few weeks are really scary when you find yourself thinking about it. But even at 20% of mc at 6 weeks - if someone told you that you had an 80% chance of winning the lottery, how quickly would you buy that ticket?!

Congratulations on your pregnancy and lots of luck with the 8 week scan! If you are in london everyone will recommend the fetal medicine centre on Harley street - I like it because they donate profits to charity
