Can you get pregnant while bf?

My daughters 3 months old. I bf her on demand and people told me I most likely couldn't get pregnant. I had my first period when she was 7 weeks old and since then I haven't had one but now I'm spotting and getting cramps. The same first symptoms I had when I was pregnant with my daughter. Now I'm hearing that it's not that hard to get pregnant while bf. Has anyone gotten pregnant as early as 3 months after giving birth and just bf? Is it even possible?

Jiggly and scaevola - I'm not saying it isn't one of the NHS and WHO's criteria, just that on its own it clearly isn't a good indicator of being unable to get pg, as shown by at least 2 posters on this thread now.

I am sat BF the baby I conceived while BF the older brother..I conceived when baby was 8 months old, he was still having a feed in the night and I had had 3 periods after my post partum bleeding had stopped. The ironic thing is that baby's older brother was conceived from IVF. So total surprise and a miracle for us. Baby miracle is now 4 was old and for the first time ever, hubby and I need to use contraception Shock

Yes you can even if periods not yet come back!!

I am sitting BFing my twins who were conceived when DS1 was 10.5mo and still BFing a lot!

If your period has returned then you can get pregnant.

I did a lot of research into conceiving while breastfeeding and it seems to be so personal to each and every woman.

Bottom line: don't rely on exclusive or ecological breastfeeding as a contraceptive.

Good luck Smile

Oh and even if your period hasn't returned you may well catch the first egg!

sarkymare · 07/05/2015 16:03

You ovulate about 2 weeks before you have your period which is why it's true to say that having your period return or not is not really a reliable way of determining fertility.

Unless you use OPK or the like then you won't know you have started ovulating again until your period has returned. By then it could be too late and conception has already occurred.

Yes you can get pregnant! Breast feeding, even feeding on demand, only provides a degree of protection, not protection full stop.

Yep, I was exclusively bfing DC1 (on the hour every hour as I recall!) and conceived DC2 at 3 months. (DC2 was then late so nearly 10 months between them).

But the brain doesn't! Sorry, I meant 13 months! Blush

Everything - I know someone who tried for a baby 12 years, had several lots of Ivf to conceive. Then when miracle baby was 5 month old naturally conceived triplets!

Artandco · 07/05/2015 20:46

Oh and triplets born early so has 4 children the same age for a few weeks a year
