Vitamin D question

Hi all,

This is probably going to be the silliest question out there, but still I'm worried... I'm taking vitamin D capsules 10mcg a day as recommended. However I noticed on the bottle it says 'made from fish oil', and I'm sure I've read it everywhere that we are not supposed to have anything with fish oil during pregnancy! It's been baffling me and I even emailed the vitamin manufacturers, but they never bothered to reply! Angry TIA

i have never heard you're not supposed to have fish oil in pregnancy. Maybe you mean cod liver oil? That's different and indeed not suitable.

bunny85 · 06/05/2015 22:33

Thanks HuzzleNutt, I've just double checked and it says 'from fish liver oil' . I'm really panicking right now Sad What do I do?? I've been taking it every day.

don't panic. Liver, including liver oil is not recommended because of high vit A content. But even if it was pure cod liver oil, that has 100 000IU of vit A per 100 gr. There are studies that didn't find any higher birth defect rates in women who took more than 50 000IU daily and you are nowhere near that with just one capsule. For example www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/9988877

What do you think I should do now, stop it? I wonder why the pharmacist even gave it to me, I did mention I was pregnant. Also it just says Vitamin D3, no mention of Vitamin A... Don't know what to think now?

I'm absolutely sick with worry... Sad

what brand is it? I'm not a scientist, so maybe they have removed the vit A somehow, especially if it doesn't say anything about it in?
If you're worried yes I would switch to another brand, but as said, even if it had full dose of vit A, it's very unlikely you have done any damage, unless you also ate a whole pig liver every day.

Jackieharris · 07/05/2015 06:48

Don't worry about what you've had.

Just switch to a specialist prenatal pill that contains vitamin d from now on so you don't worry.

The brand is called 'Solgar'. Recommended by the pharmacist...
Thank you everyone for your replies..

Ok, update! Just called Solgar's customer service. The lady very helpfully explained that it's safe for me to take it as there's no vitamin A there, it has all been removed (HazleNutt, you are not a scientist, but you were spot on!). And even mercury traces have been cleaned out she said. Omg, I worried myself sick and hardly slept last night...

P.S. HazleNutt, just realised, sorry I misspelled your name in my pp. I wasn't in the normal state of mind last night Smile

Thank you everyone for the support again!

I'm really confused by this. I'm taking fish oil DHA supplements on my doctor's recommendation. The box says "for pregnant and nursing mothers" on it. Where did you read not to take fish oil in pregnancy?

bunny85 · 07/05/2015 13:26

I know, it is terribly confusing. Took me a long time to figure out. But basically there are two types of it, fish oil supplements (ok to take) and supplements made from the liver of fish (not ok) as explained, for example, here:
www.babycentre.co.uk/x541094/is-it-safe-to-take-fish-oil-supplements-in-pregnancy

So obviously I panicked when I saw that my vitamin D is made of fish liver oil! Confused

Sorry don't know how to make the link highlighted (on my phone right now), but you can copy and paste it x
