2nd pregnancy - waters breaking question?

I just wondered - if your waters didn't break before you started labour the first time (ie: they broke during pushing or were broken in hospital instead), was it the same the second time around - or is it completely random?

I'm just curious as first time mine were broken by the midwife in hospital when I was in labour to try and speed things up...

First labour - waters broken for me

Second labour - spontaneous rupture at 38+4 in bed

farmerswifey · 05/05/2015 16:26

The same as Lotsoftoast.

First labour - Waters broken by the midwife
Second labour - Waters went pop at 11 pm - baby born at 3.53am

First labour, waters broke in bed at 39 weeks.

Second labour, waters broke in birthing pool moments before baby born at 41 weeks.

Totally different.

Interesting I'm 38+3 and I'm wondering the same. First time they broke in the pool in hospital when I was well into established labour.

First time they were broken to speed up labour.

Second time? Spontaneous rupture just as the midwife went in for an internal at 4cm. All over her hand and arm Blush

Lamaitresse · 05/05/2015 20:26

Midwife broke my waters in my first labour.

Waters went spontaneously in second pregnancy at 39+3 and dd was born that afternoon. Was hind waters though, so only the tiniest trickle - they had to test to see if was actually my waters!

shutupaboutstarwars · 05/05/2015 20:29

All 3pretty similar. Waters broke quite a few hours before I went into labour

OllyBJolly · 05/05/2015 20:31

First time, ruptured by midwife.

Second time, popped when I was asleep on expected day of delivery (and I'm sure it was the pop that woke me up). Phenomenal amount of liquid -like a tap had been turned on!

tippytappywriter · 05/05/2015 20:31

First one they broke just before pushing. Second one they broke first and then contractions 30 mins later. So very different.

RugBugs · 05/05/2015 20:33

Both times they've gone right before transition.

Luciferbox · 05/05/2015 20:35

No don't tell me this. I had mine broken at 42 wks and have been naively assuming I won't pop the second time around. They're going to go whilst I'm in work aren't they?

woolymammoth · 05/05/2015 20:50

First time: broken by MW at 8cm dilated.

Second time: went spontaneously at 38w+1 in bed at 3am. Labour started properly 12 hours later.

For some reason I hadn't even considered this might happen and didn't have any kind of STs or mat pads- just the thinnest panty liners. So was waddling around with folded up muslins in my knickers which kept getting soaked every few minutes when the baby wriggled and more fluid gushed out. Luckily when I went in for a check at midday the MW took laughed at the paltry liner and took pity on me and gave me a pack of mat pads.

Moral of the story: buy mat pads!

Very interesting - thanks for sharing! Seems like no correlation at all - better stock up on those bedmate again to protect my mattress from potential flooding!

First labour, waters went around 4 hours before dd was born. (After 30 hours of latent labour). Didn't have a huge gush, think they were trickling tbh.

Second labour, waters went around 2.5 hours before dd was born. Very mild contractions before this then ramped right up as soon as they popped. Big gush of water that time

TwoLittleBlooms · 05/05/2015 23:15

First pregnancy waters were broken during labour (induced 40+10) by midwife. Second pregnancy waters went naturally at 40+1 (although thought I had wet myself as I was laughing so much at a classic thread on mn!) - an initial trickle and then massive gush. Contractions started properly within the hour and baby born that afternoon.

KeepSmiling83 · 06/05/2015 09:51

First time my waters broke spontaneously on my due date.

Second time I was induced and they broke while I was pushing!

Fattycow · 06/05/2015 13:31

It is random.
