I hope everyone suffering from the Horrors of Hyperemesis will find this thread useful as a source of support and information.

There's no TMI on here - can't be by definition - and nobody should feel ashamed of moaning as much as they feel the need to.

MOH's wonderful website is full of useful information on this illness:
sites.google.com/site/pregnancysicknesssos/
Another invaluable website is:
www.pregnancysicknesssupport.org.uk/
If you need help in obtaining medication, this phone number is
brilliant:
024 7638 2020

Lastly, the NICE guidelines on treatment are useful:
cks.nice.org.uk/nauseavomiting-in-pregnancy#!prescribinginfosub

I would like to thank Everyone who has given such invaluable support and advice on this and on previous threads.

Remember when you are at your worst, 'This Too Shall Pass'. It really will.
So many women on this thread have thought they couldn't get through this, but they did.

lilac ... every sympathy. not sure what else to say only that we understand because we've been through it, and to listen.

eliz'smum my husband was better second time round too. It really helped, as much as anything can.

I wish men understood that REST is the best thing for HG, after meds. REST, rest, REST.

melle how are you feelign now with the cold? it's the last thing you need with HG. I have the impression that things are maybe very slightly better, or have I misread?

zippys how did the GTT go?

penguins and amyyy and ealli hope your day was endurable. amyyy please do order Ketostix from Amazon. they test for dehydration.

Amyyy27 · 19/05/2015 20:19

Thanks meerka will order some now!

Melleebacca · 19/05/2015 20:26

Meerka - I was doing quite well before I caught the cold. Building up my strength and only vomiting every couple of days. The cold made me throw up everything including the soothing lemon and honey drinks my husband made me, for the first 24hours anyways. I'm still in the throes of it, but look to be improving. At least I can eat enough now to have enough in my stomach for the paracetamol to work on. Smile

It's awful to hear about the aggravating OHs. They are just trying to help, in their own way. My hubby has been amazing at caring for me, but less amazing at keeping the house in order. I've just learnt to care less, not hard when I'm lying on the sofa all day Smile

Hope everyone had a good day!

Meerka · 19/05/2015 21:20

yes, any extra stress on the body does make things harder. The extra HG effects should fade with teh cold ...

eallison88 · 19/05/2015 21:47

First vomit for a few days, probably a week, tonight. Feeling very down. Tho I know its really not a big thing. I just don't want to go back to all the vomiting. Meant to be camping at a festival this weekend. I've been so looking forward to it, especially since turning the corner. Must try not to panic and think it's gonna be a disaster! Just keep reminding myself that my dads house is only 30 mins away, so I'll just sleep there or give up and go there if I need to.

Amyyy27 · 20/05/2015 06:41

ealli hope it's just a one off bad day and you get to enjoy your weekend x

LilacWine7 · 20/05/2015 12:13

Feeling slightly better today Smile
DH was very apologetic when he got home last night. Had a long chat then he gave me a lovely foot-massage until I fell asleep! So relieved. Also kept some food and meds down and slept well.
Had 3 vom-sessions this morn (once after fruit smoothie, then again after cherries/banana) so think fruit is a problem right now, will stick to bland carbs for few days. Kept some toast down this morning which is good sign! Still struggling with liquids so I've been eating half-melted ice-pops instead of drinking. Taking it very easy today.

Mellee hope your cold clears up soon! I had attack of sinusitis in first trimester, the pain and congestion made nausea worse as decongestants off-limits (apart from saline which was useless). Is the honey and lemon helping now? I found steam helped, inhaled it through a facial-sauna mask few times a day.

Eallison hope the vom was a one-off and you get to enjoy the festival!

Amy how are you feeling, are you keeping more down? Hope the Cyclizine starts working soon!

Amyyy27 · 20/05/2015 12:34

lilac glad you are feeling a bit better! I've managed a little extra food today and done some housework! I'm also struggling with liquids though so having ice lolly/ice cubes instead.

LucindaE · 20/05/2015 14:10

I'm glad OH's are duly repentant [winks]
eallsion I do hope it is a one off, people sometimes have the occasional bad day, just as in the beginning they have the occasional good one.
lilac Fruit seems to be off limits for a lot of people, though some can handle tinned, it's dismal you can't have that. Weirdly, it does seem to be the case that unhealthy sorts of foods are the most palatable - crisps, chips, jelly, and often sugary drinks. Then people can jump to the conclusion that's the sufferer's normal diet, and the cause of the problem Angry.

Mellee Sorry to hear about the cold, I somehow missed that, very miserable.
Waves to elizabethsum and Meerka and everyone.

lilac very pleased to hear your husband is tryign to be more supportive!

ealli I can only second mother Hen, hopefully it really is just one day and you have a great weekend.

melle are you feeling any better?

amyyy do take it easy with housework. I know it feels awfulw hen things arent as you like them but overexerting yoruself really makes the HG worse and you're right in the thick of it atm ...

hello, how are you doing?

eallison88 · 21/05/2015 06:58

Yesterday was better than Tues. Not as good as it has been, but definitely an improvement on Tues! Thanks for positive thoughts.

amyy as others have said, just cos you have a good day, don't push yourself too far. Your house can be put back together later. I get the frustration but it's not worth knocking yourself back for a bit of tidying. Hoping positive steps continue.

Melleebacca · 21/05/2015 07:13

Ealli - glad you're improving slightly. I'm so impressed that you're going to a festival. I would not be able to cope at one with HG!

I'm still feeling rubbish, but I didn't puke yesterday which was nice. But I also didn't get out of my pjs. I think the pregnancy slows down the cold recovery time. Just hoping I'm feeling better in time for my birthday next week. It's depressing enough to suffer through a birthday with HG, let alone HG and a cold!

Hope everyone is surviving!

Melleebacca · 21/05/2015 07:34

Lilac - my acupuncturist said that bananas were a no go during early pregnancy, something about disrupting the chi or something. I threw up all bananas that I tried. Also had a massive issue with citrus and orange juice even though I wanted it. I've read since that super high levels of vit c can cause miscarriage in early pregnancy, so I think it's my body's way of saying no. Wish it said no in a way that didn't burn my throat though.

Meerka · 21/05/2015 08:03

now you mention it I think quite a few people have had trouble with bananas, iirc

Amyyy27 · 21/05/2015 09:53

Thanks ladies! To be honest I had it in my head that the man was coming out to fix our fan yesterday. Its next Friday.. so wasted my energy but at least its done now.

After my warning about sick pay, and feeling a lot better this morning, I decided to try and come into work today. I was good until I started driving and realised I had no mints left :( Once parked up I vomited the contents of my stomach up (keep bin liners in car thankfully), toyed with the idea of driving straight back home but battled on and came into work. Not one person has asked how I am Angry I have been sick again in the work toilets and I know it can be heard in the office and still no one thought to ask if I was ok! Grrr. I hate this place. I have put a holiday in tomorrow and already had them for next week other than Tuesday which I can't take off, although its the day my baby would have been due from my mmc last year :( Think the stress is making the HG worse. I have a constant headache and now I have a dry mouth/throat and sniffly nose. I called the GP to see if I could get checked for dehydration again today.. thought the dry throat and headache could be a sign? But they didn't have anything and told to try back tomorrow and ring as soon as they open. Do you ladies know if anyone else can check this for me? I ordered those ketostix but they aren't due until at least Saturday.

Sorry for the essay!!

I have had major trouble with bananas! Even the thought of them now makes me gag!

Hope everyone is feeling ok today x

LucindaE · 21/05/2015 10:20

any You poor thing, this sounds awful. And people being so oblivious.
I no longer know the ins and outs of ssp, I wish I could advise you better, but surely, you are too ill to work in this state? And I do feel for you about the anniversary of the due date for the baby you miscarried, I remember how upsetting it is. The first is the worst. Gentle pats on offer. I'm glad you have some time off. Bossy Mother Hen says you need new meds, these aren't helping too much, and there's lots they can try and in combination quite safely.
eallison I'm glad you had a sliightly better day.
Mellee Bananas can be rather awful to throw up. If you have heartburn, citrus can make it worse, too.
Waves to all, hoping for better days for everyone.

Amyyy27 · 21/05/2015 10:25

Thank you Lucinda, I was put on cyclizine on Monday having previously been on one whose name slips my memory but melts in the mouth. I'm not sure how long it should take for the tablets to kick in. I had felt better though, not much but enough to be able to keep food down later in the day and then this morning I didn't vomit until about 8.15 when I parked my car up, whereas usually its as soon as I wake around 5.30-6.30. But I know I don't feel right and jeez my throat is so dry :(

Meerka · 21/05/2015 11:11

In haste, the cyclizine should be in your system now, i believe it takes abouty 3 days to build up.

Is there anyone who could pop to the chemist for you for ketostix at all? I dont know of any ohter way of testing really - except how is your skin? if you pull it up on your hand and it doesn't return back down properly, or only very slowly, you might well be dehydrated.

Amyyy27 · 21/05/2015 11:16

I'm being left with a line in my skin when I pinch it together on my hands and wrists, my arms seem ok though. I am right near a chemist will go and get some myself when I can, thank you.

Amyyy27 · 21/05/2015 11:17

Can I just ask sorry, if it shows ketones, who do I contact? Would I contact my midwife?

LucindaE · 21/05/2015 11:47

Any and Meerka great advice from Meerka as ever - if the kesostix show 3+ ketones most hospitals would admit you for fluids, so you can contact either your doctor or midwife or go to A and E. Some people find it helps if the doctor phones the hospital so they know you'll be coming.
Poor old you, though, it must be foul trying to tough it out at work.

OP posts:
Amyyy27 · 21/05/2015 11:52

Thank you Lucinda that's very helpful. I am finding it very tough and my headache is getting worse. The joys! I have my break in 10 minutes will go straight to the chemist. Another question sorry (I'm clueless!) Will I need a urine sample pot like I did at the GP or can it be used like a pregnancy test?

Amyyy27 · 21/05/2015 13:09

Well I must be doing something right as there are only 'traces'. Called my midwife to double check that would be OK and she said they would only admit me if it comes back higher and to keep going as best I can. I do feel like I am deteriorating today though so will check again later today!

LilacWine7 · 21/05/2015 16:00

Amy sorry to hear you're having a tough day at work. Keep checking your keytones, they can change quickly. Dry skin, dry mouth/throat and headache are classic signs of dehydration. I know SSP is a worry but try not to push yourself at work, sounds like you're not well enough to be there. Your colleagues don't sound very understanding, how unkind not to ask how you're feeling when you've been off sick and it's obvious you're still unwell!
Do you have an Early Pregnancy Unit at your local hospital? Might be worth contacting them if you feel worse or keytones go up, they usually have a drop-in clinic with doctors available. The phone-no and opening times might be listed in the front of your maternity file.

Amyyy27 · 21/05/2015 16:05

Thanks a lot Lilac, I do have an epu but they are strictly referrals only unfortunately. My midwife did say I could call them back if ketones go up but otherwise pretty much deal with it. I must be so run down I now have a sore chest, it literally feels like when I have a chest infection and the bottom of my throat and chest is sore from the coughing and infection... only I haven't been coughing and don't have the cold I always get beforehand. I need a break!! :(
