scans

I was recently shown a scan of a baby, not the normal sort of scan I'd seen before and I found it a bit disturbing. I think mums to be should keep scans to themselves. I mean, you wouldn't go around showing an ex-ray of your lung or a mammogram. The reason for a scan is to make sure everything is ok and I really don't see the point in 'sharing' the scan photo with anyone.
Apart from anything else, I don't think it's natural to have such a strong image of a baby that isn't yet born and sharing it around family and friends. It's a bit like buying a present for someone that you've bought in her presence and then saying, I'll wrap it and give it to you at Christmas.

Although I do find the whole scan as a FB profile picture a bit cringeworthy I find it hard to get worried about it. They're just excited about having a baby and want to tell/ show everyone.

5YearsTime · 01/05/2015 03:51

God you're cheery... It isn't a pic of their lung though is it?! It's their unborn child, quite an exciting thing!
What's "disturbing" about it?

There's a lot of things which are not "natural" that we still do...

Number3cometome · 01/05/2015 09:48

Yawn, someone's bored and looking to get blasted on Mumsnet.
Here, have my first ever Biscuit

Number3cometome · 01/05/2015 09:49

Oh look, first time poster too, I am so shocked Hmm

tinytim2 · 01/05/2015 09:53

Just spare a thought for others, that's all I'm saying. I chose not to have scans and I've had five children.

I'm currently sat here, full bladder waiting to have my dating scan. If all is well I shall post up a pic for you to enjoy later! Grin

Number3cometome · 01/05/2015 09:55

That's your choice, you also have the choice to say "no thanks" when offered to see a picture.

What's the big deal?

Focusfocus · 01/05/2015 09:57

Ok. You've told us how you feel. So what? Who are you? Who cares?

lauraa4 · 01/05/2015 09:58

Are you a parent or expecting a baby? If not then obviously you wouldn't understand how exciting it is. If you are then maybe you are just a very private person. I'm guessing by you saying it was 'not the normal sort of scan you had seen before' you were referring to a 4D scan which do make babies look a bit alien like! However coming on here to comment on the fact that mums's should be keeping it private and that it's not natural to have such a strong image of a baby. have you forgotten you are writing things on 'mumsnet' and most of the mums on here will be doing exactly the things that you say are disturbing you! Maybe you should be discussing these comments with your friends in private then broadcasting it on here. Some mums have been through many traumatic miscarriages or hard times and feel proud to show people their scan photos. If it offends you don't look!

Lunastarfish · 01/05/2015 10:03

I found that people were actively asking me to see the scan pictures

Number3cometome · 01/05/2015 10:03

You've had 5 kids and never had a scan?

Interesting.

OneLittleManOneInOven · 01/05/2015 10:11

5 children and not one scan? As you said the scans are for health reasons so we're you not concerned about the health of your children

AbbeyRoadCrossing · 01/05/2015 10:11

Have my first Biscuit too

I don't share mine as I find it personal to me, but everyone else can do what they like though.

OneLittleManOneInOven · 01/05/2015 10:12

What is disturbing about these gorgeous little feet, I suppose scan pictures are abit like opinions, you can always keep them to yourself but most people do like to share theirs...

GlitzAndGigglesx · 01/05/2015 10:16

Whether it's a parents first baby or their 8th they can show whoever they like. I showed people my 12w and 20w scan pics to show how much the babies have grown in that time and it looked like one of them was having a dance. There are bigger things to stress over in life

MooleyWooleyShamaLamaDingDong · 01/05/2015 10:54

Onelittleman what a gorgeous scan pic. Lovely feet :) Just brilliant.

I have one DD and am currently pg with my second. I had a miscarriage at 11 weeks before Christmas, one week before my dating scan. It was physically and emotionally draining. I was so excited to get to my 12 week scan this time around and see my gorgeous baby there on the screen, alive and well.

As others have said, it's a personal preference whether you have a scan or not, but that does not mean that sharing such a lovely, happy and exciting moment with those closest to you is wrong! Everybody i showed my picture to was happy and excited with me and it was lovely to share that moment. It was definitely NOT unnatural!!!!!

Teeste · 01/05/2015 11:19

I've shared a couple of my scans on FB. Not all of them, though, as it does seem a little weird to go 'hey, look at my uterus!' in public. I personally think a little goes a long way for me. But I don't mind others sharing whatever they like - it's natural to feel proud and excited.

And Onelittleman - I'd tickle those little toesies like anything! Grin

MummyPiggy87 · 01/05/2015 15:39

What a troll.
Who compares a baby's scan photo to a lung x-ray!
I've never in my life heard anyone say something to stupid.

MummyPiggy87 · 01/05/2015 15:40

And onelittleman that photo is adorable Grin

ItsADinosaur · 01/05/2015 16:46

Have my first ever Biscuit

thesmallbear · 01/05/2015 17:46

This also gets my first ever Biscuit

Bluepetra · 01/05/2015 17:56

Strange reaction to a scan picture of your own child. Scans are marvellous and although our babies can look odd in there, it's a beautiful image to be very proud of.

mrsthoree3009 · 01/05/2015 18:18

Internet troll

ovumahead · 01/05/2015 19:55

Definitely a troll and a bit lame too! Yawn! Love the scan pic of the feet... Amazingly clear. I personally think scans are truly amazing - crazy we get to see so much before they're even born. I love technology.

craftynanny · 01/05/2015 20:31
