Second hand cot bed?

Hi all-ive just bought a second hand John Lewis cot from another mum all v clean and she threw in the mattress which all looks clean and fine.is it ok to have a second hand mattress-been told it linked to cot death but others say its fine aslong as clean etc.

Hi I got a second hand cot with mattress from a a friend all was clean and my daughter was fine we have just built it up yet again for our son who is due in 2 wreeks . if your unsure you can always pick up a new mattress.

I would just have a good look at it- if still firm and clean I can't see there being a problem. We got a second hand cot bed and mattress for our son and it was fine but we got a new mattress for our 2nd for no reason other than we thought we should.

I have a second hand one too, but little one won't be going into it until 6months as in a crib, so risks much reduced by then. If there is any mould whatsoever I wouldn't use it though. If it looks totally clean I honestly think it's fine but others will no doubt be ----hysterical advising against it

With all baby safety type things I took the approach of "can I afford it" combined with "do I think it's a credible risk" and "how bad is the possible worst case outcome".

For the new mattress advice, since they still don't know what causes cot death, the possible outcome is fairly disastrous and you can get new mattresses for not much money (compared to things like car seats and prams for example) I decided to go for a new mattress.

My cot, Moses basket and crib are all second hand. Although their in great condition i still bought new mattresses for all. I'm overly paranoid though
