Where does baby sleep?

I'm getting myself confused. I was going to get a bednest but now am not so sure about it. If I don't does the baby go straight into a normal sized cot or do they sleep in a Moses basket throughout the night? If they can sleep in the basket is this usually on a stand and is this secure enough next to the bed ie it's no going to get knocked off!!

It's completely up to you where baby sleeps!

We will have a cot in our room which is adjusted to the highest level for ease of getting baby in and out for a feed.

We will have a moses basket in our front room for baby to sleep in (only got this as was given by a friend or wouldn't have bothered)

But more than likely baby will be in bed with me like the previous two dc's!

I never had a Moses basket and used a crib instead. When they outgrew the crib they went into a cot. For downstairs sleeping I used the carrycot bit of the travel system we had.

There are lots of options here. But the Moses basket can indeed be used next to the bed until the child outgrows it. I'd make the decision based on how long you would like little one to stay in your room. My 8 month old only just moved out, and my first was huge and outgrew Moses basket by 5 weeks- so it depends. In this case we only used Moses basket for first for 5 weeks and then moved him into his own room:m. Second child, knew I wanted him with us longer so bought a stokke sleepi (second hand on eBay) which was the ideal size and he slept in it since day 1. If you liked the bed nest but are now having doubts have you considered the little green sheep alternative or the baby dan baby bay (?) they had these are the hospital on the maternity ward and I was impressed by how sturdy they were. Could pick one up second hand on eBay and buy a new mattress.

We had a Troll bedside crib until she was about 7mo. Then she went into a normal cot, still in our room. Then in the cot in her own room from about 11mo.

I have never had a Moses basket either. I just think they're a bit pointless.

We've bought a crib to go beside our bed and have a Moses basket downstairs. Will probably change to the cot at around six months

It's supposed to be in the same room as you for 6mo. What you should get depends on your bedroom size. We have a cot because it fits. But if not you will need a crib or Moses basket.

14 week old has been in Moses basket next to my bed since birth. It's got a rocking frame which is pretty sturdy. Never been concerned about it getting knocked off. He's only got another couple of weeks I'd say before he outgrows it. Then he'll be moving into his cot in my room. If I remember rightly, I think I moved my older two into their own rooms between 6 and 9 months.
For sleeping downstairs, he usually goes into his pram or sometimes I bring down the Moses basket.

We had a Moses basket large enough for 91st centile length ds to stay in until 6months. The benefit was we could move it round the house with us so he slept in the same room as us for all sleeps.

There are sources for that all over the place. It's to do with the reduction of SIDS risk. I don't have time to google for you but it should be pretty easy to find.

The same room for six months thing is recommended practise for reduction of SIDS risk, as hearing you breath helps to regulate baby's breathing.

We did crib, then cot, then ended up co sleeping for 9 months as I needed to get some sleep! Then at 18 months lo went into his own single bed. We didn't plan that in advance though, apart from starting with the crib, it was just worked best for our family at each stage.

This time round we're planning on skipping the crib, and just making the cot into a side car against our bed from the outset.

Yes, check any current UK advice and it will tell you baby should stay in your room for six months.

They are only guidelines though and it's not practical for everyone if you can't fit a cot in your room. We had Moses basket in our room until DD outgrew it (3 months) then a travel cot for another month and a half before moving her to a full size cot in her own room at 4 & 1/2 months.

Good thing about Moses basket was we could take it downstairs for use in the day. She outgrew it so quickly though it seemed a bit pointless. I'd maybe go to a Next2me crib next time. She spent the first few weeks in our bed at night so the basket really didn't get used much!

It will depend on your house/flat layout and where you want baby to sleep for both day and night. I'd imagine different things work for different people.

Thanks. The advice here in the US isn't as stringent (i.e. it's a guideline only) so it's interesting to see. Not sure how practical it is for us as our bedroom is really small and an awkward shape, meaning we're going to struggle to find somewhere to put a crib. We're in a one level 2 bed flat tho and the bedrooms are right next to each other so I'm hoping we can make use of this when we decide to move the baby.

One other question for those of you who've done it before - did your sleep / bedtime schedule affect your baby by waking them up etc? I ask as the OH often has to get up very early or comes home v late due to work commitments; I know he'll be as quiet as possible, but I can't see a situation where the baby won't get woken up as a result

The Snuzpod looks great but you can't use a monitor if its used as a bedside crib - what does everyone think about this? I feel like using one would make me less anxious!

I used a moses basket until my girl was about 4-5 months. She loved it and slept in it really well, think she liked being cozy. We generally had it on the floor next to the bed as I was worried it would get knocked off if one of us got up in the night. Everyone's different and all babies are different!

If you can fit a cot in your room that's fine, we had DS2 in a Moses basket in our room until he outgrew it, on a stand.

We used a SnuzPod until five months MissTwister. No monitor wasn't an issue because she was never alone in the bedroom. She slept in her pram downstairs during the day (the SIDS advice also applies to naps), and also in the evening before we went to bed ourselves.

We've only just got a monitor now she's in a cot (still in our room) and we put her to bed in it now.

applecore I too thought that Moses baskets were pointless until I was expecting DS2, there was no room in our room for a cot and I wanted him in with us until he was at least 6 months old.

So I contacted little green sheep about the angelcare advice on this. If you want to use a motion mat and attach it to the side of your bed then the monitor may on the odd occasion get a false positive result (it counts one of your movements as that of the baby). It is quite unlikely though and is only a very small theoretical risk. If it makes you feel uncomfortable then either use it only in stand alone mode (Not attached to the bed)- or only have the monitor on when you're not in bed.

We have the bednest and love it. It's so nice having him right there but not quite in with me ( struggle to share with DH let alone a little one) He is 6 months and will get a bit longer out of it before the cot. I used a Moses basket last time and it was just a waste.

Number 1 was in a Moses basket in our room but not close to the bed, on a stand until about 4 months when he outgrew. Then he went in an amby nest close enough for DH to rock it with his foot. Then he went in a cotbed in his own room. Nightmare getting out of bed all night and trotting through the house!

Number 2 sometimes bed shared, sometimes the Moses was on our bed, and usually in a travel cot next to the bed. She stayed there til about 12m when she moved in with her brother. So much easier being in the same room and so close to pick up and boob during the night.

Number 3 will have an adapted cot tied to the bed to make a co sleeper which will hopefully be even easier for night feeds. And will stay until they're not feeding as much or we wake each other too much.
