Have you had placenta praevia twice?

I had placenta praevia with my first pregnancy. Big bleeds, frequent stays in hospital, living in fear but made it to 37 and DS arrived safely by emergency caesarean.

Now I am 15 weeks pregnant and have been told that the chances of having it again are the same as anyone who has had 1 previous section which is roughly 5% but an terrified. At my 12 week scan the lady wouldn't tell me if it was high or low. She said she wouldn't be able to tell although I have read they can...
Am wondering if I could get a private scan to see where it is rather than wait another 5 weeks... I don't feel like I can enjoy being pregnant until I know! But then if it is low then I will just feel worse...

If you had It the first time did you get it again?

Mine wasn't complete praevia. It was low lying at 20 week scan and in the end there was just a finger of it less than 2 away but it was obviously very unstable as I kept having bleeds. I was booked in for a planned section at 37+5 but at 37+2 I went to see the midwife and the student gave me an examination before I realised what she was doing pressing down low on my abdomen which isn't a good idea when you have unstable pp. A few hours later I started bleeding and DS was delivered pronto!

I have come back to update that my placenta second time round is anterior and well out of the way!

That's great boolean hooray for well behaved placentas

My scan is in 2 weeks, still no bleeds which is good so I'm hopeful, although I now have a ridiculous fear of it being in my scar. No idea why

Hello ladies, just seen this today. I had PP twice, in pregnancies 2 and 3 (well actually 3&4 as I had a MMC) both my PP babies were girls.

I had a manual removal of placenta with DS, which I'm told can increase risk of PP.

I had a big bleed with DD1 at 33.5 weeks. I was then in hospital until ELCS at 33.7 weeks. I asked about risk in subsequent pregnancy and was told not to worry, no additional risk.

At my dating scan with DD2, we asked where the placenta was, the sonographer said she couldn't see it, so either top opt bottom? We looked at each other, said at the bottom, PP again, another girl... Right on all counts.

Pregnancy not as good, admissions at 24 weeks, 26, 3 tines at 31 weeks, kept I. At 32 weeks, then EMCS at 36+1. Baby fine.

Any questions, just ask.

Oh yes, grade 4 both times.

AbbeyRoadCrossing · 29/05/2015 21:46

I asked where mine was at the dating scan too AuditAngel and she said something like 'we don't diagnose at this stage' and didn't say where it was. So that got me thinking maybe low again. But with DS I'd already had bleeds by now (I'm 18 weeks) so hoping it's ok

Abbey I asked at my dating scan and she said they can't tell yet as well so don't take that as meaning yours is low! Will keep my fingers crossed for you. Remember the odds are in you favour. That's the only way I have coped these last few weeks.

I had pp stage 4 for my ds but had no bleeds whatsoever. I had early contractions at 30 weeks which was how we found out I had pp and it was posterior. I was signed off work and delivered at 39 weeks by elcs. Ds was 8pounds 1 and all went well.

Dd was a vbac. Placenta was this time anterior. All well.

Good luck all. Thanks

Mines anterior and very low at 19 weeks. I'm really hoping it'll move out of the way and not looking forward to the wait until the next scan at 32 weeks :(
They didn't do any measurements and didn't tell me what grade it was (rather rude sonographer actually, thought I was being sensitive until Dh came out with 'what a cow!' On the way home!) so I'm at a loss really. I know 90% do clear the os, but still worried...

Skiptonlass · 30/05/2015 12:27

I found this online but there's no indication of parity or previous c sections....

Hi ladies

I had a posterior low placenta with DC1 (boy), which lead to a bleed at 16 weeks. By 24 (or 27? I don't quite remember) weeks it had already moved up. DC1 was delivered by emcs because of failure to descend (I had dilated completely and had been pushing for 2 hours).

DC2 (girl) was a high placenta, no problems and she was delivered by VBAC.

I'm 21+2 pregnant with DC3 (boy) now and was told at my 20 week scan that my placenta is low anterior. I wasn't told how low exactly, but the good news is that the structure is all normal. I am now due to be rescanned at 32 weeks to see if it has moved up. I haven't had any bleeds so far, so that's a good sign.

I am really, really scared of placenta accreta though. Sad I would love to have another vaginal delivery of course, but totally fine with a C-section if it's needed. I am just so scared that my placenta won't move up because it has decided to fuse itself to my old C-section scar, which, although quite rare (but again, depending on the sources you read, NOT so rare) can lead to very bad complications.

There is obviously nothing I can do at the moment. Just wait and hope that it will move away from the scar...

AuditAngel · 09/06/2015 07:06

My second PP pregnancy placenta completely covered the CS scar, but I didn't get Acreta. I was sent to Queen Charlottes in an ambulance whilst a patient at WestMid, as someone there was involved in a study to determine the best way to diagnose PA, also had an MRI as part of the study.

AbbeyRoadCrossing · 09/06/2015 08:37

This keeps dropping off my active threads for some reason.
My scan is on Thursday so not long to wait now. I too am worried about accreta for some reason.
I think on my notes last time it was near the OS, but at no point was it touching (although it must've been when it came out!) but I don't remember them telling me the grade at 20 or 33 week scans, just that it was low and near, and they didn't seem that bothered so neither was I!
Anyway fingers crossed for Thursday and that those of you with low lying again have it move

AbbeyRoadCrossing · 11/06/2015 15:28

So my placenta is high this time - phew!
But at the front and might attach to my scar, but ok so far - another thing to google
