Well, get them to fill the tub early (as soon as you arrive) as if its not your first, they can come pretty quick once you get into established labour. They only barely got mine filled.

One thing you cannot do is raise your body out of the water once the head is out. Sounds stupid but you still have one or two of the biggest contractions of your life at that point and the urge to stand and bear down is unreal. The midwife had literally just told me I couldn't stand under any circumstances but when the last contraction hit she and my hubby had to hold me down to keep me in the water properly.

Finally, I'm not sure if you can avoid this but I ended up hanging on the side for contractions and pushing while holding the edge of the bath. I must have gripped like a mother*&^er because the only pain/discomfort I had after the water birth was pulled muscles across my ribs and back from pushing while holding the bath edge. Could barely stand and speak for a few days. So maybe try to be aware of where your body is while pushing and that you are not pulling against something with your arms up and around the bath. That might help.

Found the water birth many times easier after a horrific first birth with foreceps and the works. Good luck!

Thanks for your help... I had my water birth yesterday... It was definitely an amazing experience but unfortunately the pain got too much and I was too hot so ended up getting out and having him on the bed.
I do feel the water eased the contractions at first and I'm glad I experienced it.
I am now the mother of the most beautiful little boy.. All healthy and happy.. I'm in awe.
