subchorionic hematoma

Hi guys just looking for some info or advice.

I had a scan yesterday at 6+4 weeks pregnant. Baby's fine and heartbeat is strong measuring good. However they found a small subchorionic hematoma.
They told me to expect a bleed soon as it had already passed by the baby and was on its way out. She told me its nothing to worry about but of course I've read so many horror stories of this causing miscarriages.

Has anyone ever experienced one or has any advice to ease my mind before my reassurance scan in two weeks. Im currently experiencing mild cramps but no bleed yet. I dont think it will be long until the bleed comes though I feel like I am about to start my period :(.

I had one, in my case it was the bleeding that alerted me. I actually bled lightly at 4 weeks and thought it was period (didn't know I was pregnant) then found out I was pregnant a week later but had a very scary, heavy bleed. We assumed miscarriage but turned out it was a subchorionic hematoma. At the first scan there was no heartbeat as I was only 5+4, but they re-scanned a week later and there was a heartbeat. Bleeding continued lightly for a few weeks and by the 12 week scan it was all gone!
The fact that they have seen a heartbeat and it has passed the baby is a good sign. Try not to worry too much if/when bleeding happens (and it may not, sometimes they are simply 'reabsorbed'.

I had one too, but again found out because of bleeding. It hadn't 'passed the baby by' and was right next to it when it was spotted, but it did and although I had spotting until about 13 weeks, the baby is now 6 and careering around the garden!

I had one too - discovered it when I began bleeding heavily at 5 weeks ish. I had weekly scans up to 10 weeks at which point it disappeared. I'm now 23+6

I had a massive bleed at 11 weeks. They couldn't see in on the scan whilst I was bleeding - apparently they can only see old blood. I was scanned a week later (12 week scan so not because of bleed) and they could see it then. It's not certain it'll come out though because sometimes the old blood is reabsorbed by the body. I didn't bleed again despite them seeing blood on that scan.

Thats such reassuring news thank you ever so much for getting back to me. Even though the EPU said I had nothing to worry about you obviously do as the baby is so precious. I have not had a bleed as of yet but they said I will and to expect it soon so I can only just imagine its quite near the exit now. But would you know if theres still a chance it will be absorbed.

I am lucky it has passed baby and got that baby has a strong heartbeat and doing really well. I have been reading google and came across so many horror stories so I thought it was best to post on here.

Again thanks ever so much I was worrying myself sick.

I had one too, only found out when I started bleeding heavily at 11 weeks, I hadn't had any scans at that point. I bled lightly until 20 weeks, with another heavy bleed at 14 weeks. All was fine with baby (now 2 years old).

amyboo · 18/04/2015 19:52

I had a pretty big one at 14 weeks with DS3. I was kept in hospital for a week afterwards while it cleared up so they could keep an eye on the baby. But apart from that the rest of the pregnancy was fine. DS3 is now 2 and perfectly fine.

GreatJoanUmber · 18/04/2015 20:08

I had one with my second pregnancy, like many here it was only found as I'd had a scan due to the bleeding. Then I was classed 'threatened miscarriage' for the rest of the 1T which was just lovely Hmm However, nothing happened and he's now a very healthy 3yo!

keys27 · 18/04/2015 20:14

Thanks ever so much for replying to my post. I have been so worried. But its so reassuring that all your babies have been fine. I was worried the clot would increase my chance of having a miscarriage.

GreatJoanUmber I cant imagine how worried you must have been that 13 weeks must of been just awful for you. So glad to hear LO is ok. They was not even going to re scan me but said they will as a reassurance scan. I have had no bleeding as of uet so I am very anxious.

I had this with my first pregnancy and was so worried, it was absolutely fine and I was told it's very common. X

farmerswifey · 18/04/2015 21:23

I had MASSIVE bleeds at 11 and 15 weeks which were attributed to a sub-chronic haematoma. Baby is now 37 weeks and perfectly healthy.

I too only found out about the haematoma due to a bleed. At my 12 week scan there was a large pocket of blood visible under the baby which gradually became smaller and more dense, until at my 20 week scan where it had absorbed back into my body entirely.

Both bleeds were scary as hell, there were horror-movie amounts of blood involved, but no pain and as the poster above says, I was also told it was quite common.

Thanks guys so much for the replies. I keep thinking I'm going to wake up in a pool of blood :(. She said to me don't worry if I pass clots etc I'm dreading it. They did not say to me my body can absorb it. She showed me it on the scan it looked massive. Is it still possible for my body to absorb it do you know? And how long do you think if my body does not absorb it I will start to bleed it out? I'm on edge every day. U didn't think it was that common I'm so glad I started this forum because you guys have really eased a lot if stress and worry for me. I'm so grateful xxx

I imagine in all likelihood it will be a combination of bleeding and absorption. If you do bleed it will probably start slowly (it did with me) so try not to worry too much. At least you are prepared for it and know what it is - which is much better than if you had started to bleed before you knew. Hope all goes well.

Never posted before but wanted to share my experience of a subchorionic hematoma (thus far!!)

I started bleeding two weeks ago when I thought I was 6 weeks pregnant... Thought that it was obviously a miscarriage (as have had two previous) but the bleeding was different... It was light for 3 says then stopped and I thought I had had an easy miscarriage but then a week after the initial bleed I had major continuous bleeding filling pads like there was no tomorrow... after 3 days of this I started to feel really faint so took myself to A&E as i thought maybe I need a D&C (Dilation and Curettage) to help the miscarriage along.

They sent me to early pregnancy ward (At this time I was peeing out blood!) and I eventually had a scan where they said that there was a baby with a heartbeat and a very large hematoma blood clot in my womb causing all the bleeding. They said the baby had a strong heartbeat and that I looked around 6-7 weeks.

The advice was to rest up and come back in two weeks for another scan to check on both baby and hematoma.

So its 5 days since the scan and I have on and off heavy bleeding (worse at night) and constant little bleeding but filling pads pretty frequently.

The consultant Gynae is actually a good friend of mine and she said the body will absorb the clot and everything should be fine.

I have two kids already and never experienced any bleeding or anything similar to this with either of them (although they are 8 and 12!!)

Anyway next scan is in 9 says so will update then if not before!
