Anyone not taking pregnancy multivitamins?

Just that really. With exception of folic acid and vit D I mean. Is there anyone who preferred not to take Pregnacare or any other multivit? What were your reasons?

Thank you AndThus, so you've basically conducted the experiment yourself. That's just what I kinda always felt.

I don't because I generally think multivits are a crock of shit. I take very good quality Vit D drops, calcium (cos I don't eat/ drink much dairy), folic acid (in its naturally occurring form: folate) and a probiotic (that has been clinically proven to reduce risk of allergies in babies). Oh, and high quality fish oils.

I did a lot of research about all this stuff in first pregnancy and the above is what I concluded i needed to supplement my diet. I then did further research into what particular brands/ potencies.

That's very helpful CityDweller, can you recommend exactly which ones are you taking (all of those you mentioned)? I think I might just start taking the same things except for calcium.

I took folic acid for the first 3 months and have continued with Vit D as advised by my midwife.

Anything with iron (conception and pregnancy vits ) makes me horrendously constipated. I eat plenty of fruit and veg, whole grains, lean meats and fish twice a week. Figured that should cover mist things!

MissTwister · 16/04/2015 22:31

You can break the pregnacare in half to swallow

ChatEnOeuf · 17/04/2015 16:09

Nope, just folic acid and vit D. I eat well so don't feel the need to splash out on vits as well.

Stinkersmum · 17/04/2015 16:24

I took folic acid for the first 12 weeks. Now nothing but I do eat well.

AuditAngel · 19/04/2015 07:43

I tried to remember to take pregnacare, but wasn't very good at it. When I had my booking in appointment I was told not to take anymore as I had too much iron in my blood.

Folic acid at first and then iron later on due to low levels.
I have a good diet so no need for extra vits.

bunny85 · 19/04/2015 16:51

Thanks girls, feel much better now! Smile

I took folic acid and vit D for the first 16 weeks but I was having horrific migraines so started taking pregnancy multivitamins (boots own, Asda's own) in case I was deficient in something. Now at 24 weeks I only take if I remember. I hate pregnacare's marketing and cost, and they are full of bullshit ingredients that you don't actually need. My friend just took the odd berocca. I wouldn't worry if you feel healthy and happy. Your MW would say if she was worried xxx

aletea · 19/04/2015 19:25

Liquid iron is a lot more gentle on the stomach and bowels than tablet form, if anyone feels they need it but not the side effects!

Superexcited · 19/04/2015 19:31

I was taking folic acid on its own until my booking appointment and then started a pregnancy multivitamin on the midwifed advice because I was struggling to eat much and was losing weight and probably not getting enough nutrients.
With my first two pregnancies I just took folic acid but I had no problems eating in those pregnancies.

BossWitch · 19/04/2015 19:35

I gave up pregnacare as it made me feel sick. Didn't take anything else, perfectly fine pregnancy and perfectly healthy baby!

MummyPiggy87 · 19/04/2015 20:59

I haven't taken any because they make my sickness worse! Just folic acid for me Confused

Bubble00 · 19/04/2015 21:37

So thankful I found this thread as I have had severe morning sickness and stopped taking the vitamin supplement Materna (name in Italy) just looking at the bottle makes my stomach turn. Can anyone suggest another supplement? I felt so bad so its a relief to know its not a crime Smile

IfYouWereARiverIdLearnToFloat · 19/04/2015 23:47

I'm taking pregnacare multivitamin plus omega 3. My appetite has disappeared since I got pregnant & I've gone completely off meat. I've lost 3lbs this week and I just feel happier with the vitamins to cover me until I feel like eating more.

bunny85 · 20/04/2015 12:40

Bubble, if you live in Italy, I'm not sure if they have the same brands as we do here in uk, but most popular here is Pregnacare and Seven Seas. There's also one called Centrum. Maybe speak to your GP and see what they recommend? Good luck with your pregnancy!
