20 week scan could not look at spine

I have just been for my 20 week scan and to my disappointment the baby was lying in awkward position and the baby's spine and sex could not been seen well even after walking and jumping around. I have been booked in for another scan at 22 weeks has anyone else been through this??? Basically has anyone's baby refused to move even after jumping and walking around I saw the heart beat and every thing else was ok but Iam still very worried

Dd1 was like this, just had the extra scan, no problems at all.

scarednoob · 15/04/2015 18:20

i've not been in this position myself, but another user posted the other day that her baby was in the wrong place for them to check the heart - it seems to happen that babies just aren't that co-operative.

i think your baby was just feeling a bit lazy today, like a tiny tiny teenager!

fingers crossed for the next scan, i do know what it's like to get totally psyched up for a scan only to be sent away for a later date.

This is totally normal and does not indicate any problems just that the Sonographer couldn't get the correct views to determine all is ok. It happens a lot, mostly with the spine or with the heart and face.

cathpip · 15/04/2015 18:23

My baby did this yesterday at my 20 week scan, we did find out the sex but they could not get a clear enough view of the heart as he wouldn't stop wriggling and was in an awkward position, despite jumping round. Am being rescanned next week, try not to worry as it's quite common.

ReallyNotMe · 15/04/2015 18:24

My DD was same, just wouldn't move into the right position. Had a further scan and all was fine. Try not to worry (I know it's hard) and think of it as a chance for an extra look at the baby x

I had to have dc4 scanned loads of times from 12 weeks and was told to take chocolate in with me, just in case he was lying in the wrong position, by one of the country's top frontal cardiac specialists Wink

badRoly · 15/04/2015 18:26

Feotal cardiac specialists, missed the autocorrect!

Don't panic. One of mine lay such half the spine couldn't be seen in one scan, and the other half in the next scan so, even though the sonographer had seen the entire spine (just over half each time) I had to go back for a third time...

All was fine.

Babies just do that, sometimes- they lie in ways that certain things can't be checked. There's not really a reliable way to get them to move, either.

I wonder if this means you're going to have a willful toddler later on. DD did this kind of thing, and she's certainly willful now at 2.5.

Sylwusia234 · 14/12/2019 03:22

I had the same problem and they told me to come back for another scan what should I eat or drink so the baby is not laying on her spine?

Lolalovesmarmite · 14/12/2019 07:25

I had to come back for an extra 20 week scan because the heart couldn’t be seen clearly. Sometimes babies just don’t cooperate!

Boymummy3 · 14/12/2019 08:00

I nearly had to go back at my 20wk scan because he wouldn't move his hands from his face the entire time so they couldn't check his lips etc. Eventually they told me to go for a wee and luckily enough he moved them long enough for them to then see. I've had growth scans since and everytime I go for a scan he has his hands up to his face 🙈 some babys just like to be awkward. Don't worry yourself you don't have long to wait to go back x

Jsh125 · 14/12/2019 18:56

At my 20 week scan for number 2 she was completely upside down & in the worst possible position for them to see anything at all. We went for a walk, drank orange juice, jumped around & came back an hour later. Still nothing. Best she could do was tell us what she thought the sex was.

Had to have the entire scan redone 10 days later as she couldn't get one single measurement. I panicked for those 10 days incase something was wrong but was all totally fine & my baby girl is about to turn 1.

Alderaan · 14/12/2019 23:45

We had to have an extra scan due to baby hiding behind the umbilical cord! Just think of it as an extra chance to peek at them!

babymummytobe · 15/12/2019 00:28

This is very common. I was asked to go out for an hour and walk around, but the baby still didn't shift. So we had to go back the next week and even then the baby wasn't in the perfect position, but they did get the measurements they needed.

It's absolutely nothing to worry about, but it does prologue the 20 week scan anxiety.

snowybean · 15/12/2019 00:51

My girl did this! A chocolate bar, a jog and an iced drink - all the traditional move-the-baby things - just made her hide even more, and I had to go back at a later date and pray that she was lying in a less awkward way (which she was, eventually)
