Exposure to chicken pox virus in early pregnancy?

I just found out last week that I'm about 4wks gone and during that time DS had the chicken pox.

I had the chicken pox years ago but am a bit worried that my little growing baba would have been at risk of harmConfused

Does anyone know anything about this?

Hi there. As you've previously had the chicken pox, chances are you will be fine and won't get infected. But becsuse you are pregnant, you really must get to your GP today so they can check your immunity.

I'm 10 weeks pregnant, and my DS had chicken pox a couple of weeks ago. We informed the gp who took a blood test from me anyway, but as I'd had chicken pox before I wasn't worried. It came back that I was immune.

If you go and get a blood test, they'll let you know for sure if you're immune, and if you're not they can give you something (not sure what though, as although it was explained to me I didn't understand it! Not an antibiotic, can't remember, sorry! Blush)

I'm sure you'll be fine Smile

I think you'll be fine, you should be immune if you've had it. But as others have said, get checked if you're not sure.
I'm not immune, pregnant, and people keep suggesting I get DS to catch chicken pox off their kids, so annoying!

I had this same worry last week as my friends daughter contracted it. The virus is in the infected persons system about two days before the rash shows so I didn't even know she had it when I was looking after her. I phoned my midwife straight away and she said as long as I've already had it I should be immune. I haven't become ill so would just advise you to keep an eye on how your feeling.

You should be fine if you've had it already. In my second pregnancy I caught it from dd1 I had never had it before and was so ill but my baby was fine. it was such a worry

Ok thanks! I'm going to call to book my 8 week midwife appointment today so I'll mention it then.

You will be fine if you've had it.

Abbey road, can you get a vaccination from your GP? Getting chickenpox as an adult can make you feel absolutely rotten! A friend if mine has it right now and she's been off wirk for two weeks quite poorly (she's never normally sick.)

AbbeyRoadCrossing · 15/04/2015 16:23

No unfortunately, as I'm pregnant and they don't advise it. I think it's only private otherwise but I might be wrong about that

Skiptonlass · 15/04/2015 17:43

Ah, of course. Once they are ok giving it, you could have it? Even if it's private, I'd do it. It really can make you feel crappy :)

AbbeyRoadCrossing · 15/04/2015 18:03

I really wish they'd do a vaccination programme, maybe for kids that haven't had it when they're 13 or so (whenever it is they have the rubella and HPV) as the risks to pregnant women and certain groups can be severe.
I'll pay and get it done once the baby is out! I said that last time but somehow forgot Blush
