are they worth it?

I have one booked at a epu when I am 8.4 weeks - but am 6.1 today and am very nervous... i have had two previous pregnancies which ended up with miscarriages at this point :(

should I wait or should I find somewhere private to be seen?

So sorry to hear about your previous mc's OP.

I would wait for your epu scan - private scans are good, but don't always show a heartbeat at 6 weeks which may just make you even more anxious.

If you have a heartbeat at 8 weeks you have a much less chance of miscarrying (I know the scan doesn't cause an mc but the reassurance at 6 weeks is not as safe as the reassurance at 8 weeks)

Good luck OP, I know it will be a long two weeks, but it will be worth it Smile

Agree with number. If you don't see a heartbeat at 6 week private scan which is fairly common I think you may panic more than you are now, I would wait hun, what will be will be, try and keep positive about it and wait for epu scan x

Sorry to hear about your previous mcs - I can understand why you're worried. I didn't have an early scan privately, but we did for our 20 week and the machines they used there were not only newer but were able to give a much better picture than the ones at our local hospital (where I'd had multiple scans before). To be honest, I'd wait to have it done at the EPU as you are so early along, even though I know the waiting is awful. Try to be positive, as you are pregnant now and that's all you can focus on in this moment! Good luck! Flowers

Hi Andifyoudont

I had a private scan (due to getting pregnant through ICSI) but still had to pay for it (£150-00) at 7 weeks saw and heard the heartbeat. I then paid again for another private scan at 10 weeks due to me worrying and again saw and heard the heartbeat.

So all I would say is if you are really worried about it and don't want to wait book a private scan and pay for it (I think mine were especially expensive as I have read on various threads of cheaper scans) its well worth whatever you pay for your peace of mind but perhaps wait until you are 7 weeks.

I have just had another scan on the NHS at 14 weeks and everything is still ok thank goodness but I do not know how I am going to last until my 20 week scan!

Good luck.

In your case, Babybond do a scan for £39 if you need some reassurance - I had a 'gender scan' at 18 weeks. You could book it, and ask not to know the gender, just to see baby if you wanted?

OP yes Babybond do earlier scans, but honestly I wouldn't do anything before 8 weeks as there are so many on here who will vouch that there isn't always a heartbeat to be seen before then and it can lead to real upset and anxiety.

(FYI I have had 3 early mc's and had early scans at 8 weeks (NHS) with my other 3 pregnancies) You really only get reassurance for that moment you are having the scan, then worry again!

I paid for a private scan at 9 weeks due to a previous MC - My first official scan wasn't until 13.5 weeks and I couldn't wait that long (I was driving myself mad).

I personally found it worthwhile because of the reassurance it gave me.

i agree - whilst overall they are great for reassurance or at least knowing, at 6 weeks you might just get more limbo. i went for one at what i thought was 8 weeks, to be told, "it's either 6 and your dates are out, or it's not growing - come back in a week, we give you 50/50", and even though luckily it turned out to be the former for us, it was a horrible few days.

if you were 8 weeks, i would say do it, but as you have a scan booked for 8 weeks anyway, i would just try and relax as much as you can and wait until then. fingers crossed for you.
