4D scan - don't want to know gender

Has anyone had a 4D/3D scan and did not want to know the gender? Is this possible? Ours is booked for Saturday, I am really hoping that when we tell them we don't want to know, they will miss that part out.

when we went private, we didn't want to know sex of baby but he was adamant to keep showing us (did again at 20 week scan on nhs). They did try their best to hide it and kept trying to move baby.
I'm sure that'll try their best for you but as you see everything they do (on large tv) it may be difficult x

Any one had this issue?

If you're having a 3d scan of course you'll see the gender!

Bluestocking · 13/04/2015 17:49

Glad you said it, penguin! I honestly can't see any way you could avoid seeing the sex of the baby. It's not like you can tell it to pop on a pair of shorts. Why have a 4D scan if not knowing the sex is so important?

trilbydoll · 13/04/2015 17:51

Depends how far along you are, we had a presentation scan at 36w and by that stage the baby is so squished you can't see anything! She only flicked it onto 3d for a minute or so though, maybe with a longer scan we would have ended up seeing more.

A friend of mine had a 4d scan at 29 weeks and didn't find out the sex. I suppose it depends how your baby is lying my ds had his legs open for us all to see but not all babies will be like that. I think you might have to have the mindset that baby might or might not have its bits on show no matter how hard the sonographer tries to avoid it although when I had my 4d scan they mainly concentrated on the upper body and face.

Roseybee10 · 13/04/2015 18:04

when doing a 4d scan they usually concentrate on the face.
When I asked to have the gender confirmed with both girls, they changed to 2d mode to do it.
I never saw either of my girls 'bits' in the 4d scan as they were scanning their faces.

moomoob · 13/04/2015 18:15

I should add it was at my 20 wk scan ds had his bits on show not when I had a 4d scan at 30 wks. When I had 4d the sonographer asked if I knew or wanted to know the sex before she did it so I assume she would've avoided that area of possible had I not already known

Thanks. I want the 4d scan as this will be my only child and my grandparents are coming with me who are in their 80s. They thought they would never see the day I announced I was pregnant. I only thought today that I might accidentally find out what the baby is when I am in there. It really didn't occur to me before.

If you do end finding out at the scan then the people most important to you will be with you so will be a lovely memory for all of you to share that special moment together

allotherusernamesaretaken · 13/04/2015 19:11

Just tell them you don't want to know the gender and they will avoid the relevant areas! This is what we did. Once the baby is past about 30 weeks it is quite big on the screen so there is no problem to avoid. It is lovely to see the little one's face, enjoy

Buttwing · 13/04/2015 22:30

I had a 4d scan and didn't want to know the sex it was no problem. The only thing was I kind of felt like I didn't really get value for money because they just kept it on the face so I didn't get to see anything by mistake.

Frecklefacedgirls · 13/04/2015 22:40

We didn't want to know the gender and despite having multiple scans including a private 4d scan, it was never a problem!

S2b16 · 13/04/2015 22:47

Mine wasn't a 4d scan, it was just a reassurance scan at 16 weeks but was obvious. Good luck

Lop12345 · 14/04/2015 02:23

I had a 4d scan at 29 weeks, we didn't want to find out the sex & we told them that & she said it's no problem they would only concentrate on the face. It was so amazing I'd definitely recommend it & if you did want to know the sex I can imagine it is even more amazing. We were very happy that we had it done ??

pinkie1982 · 14/04/2015 09:30

Thanks everyone. I even had a cry about this last night! I think cos I'm so scared about delivery it's part of the reason I don't want to find out the sex. I think it's something extra to look forward to and I don't want it taken away from me! I sound so strange

We had a private 4d scan at 28weeks and it was no problem, we just let the sonographer know that we didn't want to find out the sex before she started scanning - she looked at the baby on her small screen first to make sure the scanner was over the head/face and not the bottom half before switching the image on to the big screen for us all to see, then she made sure she kept the scanner over the face and top half throughout the scan.
I hope you and your family enjoy your scan - it's magical, we took both grandmothers to ours and they loved it Smile

S2b16 · 19/04/2015 19:53

Just wondering op if secret still remains? My friend is having a surprise baby and is considering one

leanne963 · 19/04/2015 21:49

Actually my SIL had a 4D scan and her and BIL didn't want to know the sex, so the sonographer didn't go down between the legs! It IS possible so have a 4D scan and not find out the sex.
