When did you need maternity clothes?

When did you first need to switch to maternity clothes?
I'm 13+5 and have a bump but not enough to wear maternity clothes yet. My normal clothes are getting very tight. I didn't need maternity clothes until 5 months with my first two pregnancies but I'm guessing I will need them much sooner this time.
How long did you hold out before buying / wearing maternity clothes?

I'm 24 weeks tomorrow (DC2) and was ecstatic yesterday to uncover my maternity stuff for work from last time round (2011). I needed it today for the first time (trousers only) and, thank God, it all fits! Not sure when I'll need the tops, if at all, as I'm a fan of long 'n loose anyway.

CommanderShepard · 13/04/2015 17:03

DC1 - didn't need them til 21 weeks. Now pregnant with DC2 and I had to start wearing maternity trousers at 8 weeks as my work trousers wouldn't do up. I can still get in my normal jeans at 18 weeks, though :)

Most of my maternity stuff isn't maternity at all - it's just stretchy.

16 weeks, I'm naturally slim and I'm all bump so I couldn't get in jeans pretty early on

I'm 13w (first time I've got this far).
I had to buy a new bra last week (32E instead of my normal 30E).
I have bought a few maternity dresses on eBay so far, but not yet worn them. I will probably need to buy a skirt for work, as I don't think my work skirts/trousers will last more than a few more weeks.
Most of my non-work clothes are stretchy, so it will probably be a while longer before I need to wear maternity there.
However, I am mostly a size 8 and have fairly narrow hips, so any "extra" has to go "out front".

I bought my first maternity clothes today (20+4, first pregnancy). I'm still ok-ish in some of my non-mat clothes but everything was starting to get a little tight. I'd just rather spend the money now, be comfortable and get more wear out of it!

Am currently 13 weeks and on holiday. Realised that none of my 'holiday' bottoms fit me anymore so had to go shopping for maternity stuff. Trying on a pair of maternity trousers felt so amazingly comfortable after a few weeks of feeling trussed up. I spent about $700 on clothes - with the encouragement of DH. I felt bad buying stuff I'll not wear again after this pregnancy but he had the it's only once you're pregnant attitude so go for it. Money isn't a particular issue luckily but I'm still not keen on spending money unnecessarily. The trousers I've bought are fantastic. But aside from a couple of new bras I'll not buy any maternity tops for now. My primark vests seem to be standing up to the job well.

I was 20 weeks (twin pregnancy) when I had to buy maternity clothes (mostly jeans/leggings) as with tops I just buy a size bigger in non maternity. I've gone up to a size 14 from a 10 but have gone up 5 cup sizes.

SingingHinnies · 13/04/2015 23:37

I never really wore maternity clothes apart from 2 pair of maternity jeans from Peacocks (very comfy) but i didn't have huge bumps. I mainly just wore oversized shirts/tops and cardies with jeans and next size up long vest tops. Normal legging's still fit as long as they were good quality ones the next size up, not paper thin arse cheek showing ones

I am Envy at all you ladies who have little neat bumps and can get away with just buying a bigger size for most /all of the pregnancy. Although I didn't need maternity clothes until 5 months with dc1&dc2 I needed them very quickly after that as my bumps grew very quickly and I was enormous by the end with strangers asking me if I was having twins (both single pregnancies). Even a bigger size in a top would have been far too small. I didn't put on weight all over, I just had huge bumps.

I'm 25 weeks and still squeezing in my normal clothes. Hoping to wear big floaty summer stuff when it gets warmer.

westcountrywoman · 14/04/2015 07:28

1st baby I was about 30 weeks (I had terrible sickness and had lost about 25% of my pre-pregnancy body weight though).

2nd baby I was about 24 weeks.

sianihedgehog · 14/04/2015 19:53

I had to buy new bras at about 8 weeks... And again at 10 and 14 weeks. I got a couple of pairs of under bump trousers at around 12 weeks, and I've been in full on maternity trousers since around 18 weeks. I'm still in regular tops for stretchy ones, but all my proper fitted shirts and blouses stopped doing up at about 16 weeks. It's my first pregnancy but I'm enormous - I think because I'm only 4'11" and very short in the body so there's no where for it to go but out front!

60sname · 14/04/2015 20:34

I am 16+5 in my first pregnancy and none of my work trousers do up. I have two pairs of maternity trousers but am holding out with elastic bands and bump bands because I know I'll quickly get sick of rotating the same two pairs of trousers.

SaggyAndLucy · 16/04/2015 03:00

I didn't with this pg. I weighed less when I gave birth than I did at conception! I wore normal clothed throughout!
it was quite a surprise given I'm a fat bird who exploded with both the other two!

gingerfluffball · 16/04/2015 04:11

Early on for new bras, and about 8-9 weeks for loose waists/dresses just because I was so bloated and anything right around my belly was hellish!

HazleNutt · 16/04/2015 08:40

It's such a liberating feeling to swap your pinching trousers for elastic maternity stuff. Honestly, don't torture yourself, if you're uncomfortable - there are plenty of bundles on ebay available, if you don't want to spend loads.

Carrierpenguin · 16/04/2015 08:46

I've been wearing maternity trousers and leggings under clothes since 13 weeks. They are so much more comfortable than squeezing into my normal clothes! I don't like the thought of squeezing baby eithe, let it all hang out! I still fit some of my baggier normal tops and t shirts though, I'm 23 weeks now.

Pigriver · 16/04/2015 08:56

15-16weeks I think, mainly for trousers. I am a size 12 and live in skinny jeans/trousers so they got tight pretty quickly!
I bought a pair of jeans and work trousers plus 2 pairs of normal leggings in next size up. Went through my wardrobe to see what might last a few more weeks. Praying for summer weather to wear my maxi dresses.
I do begrudge buying maternity clothes that you are only in a few months but buy a few bits early on and make them do.
