I've left 2 messages with the number given to me by the doctor and had no reply yet. When should I be expecting to see her, and do you think this is a bad sign for the future?!

its anything between 8 and 10 weeks before they book u in. is it your first? can take longer (ie more like 10 weeks) if its not your first

WaitingForGodKnows · 02/11/2006 18:38

Don't panic

It's still quite early. My hospital don't usually book women until after their nuchal scans, so around 12-13 weeks is the average

Is the midwife attached to your drs, or is it a hospital number? Has the dr booked a scan for you? Each area is different in how they handle bookings. Is this your first?

bumperlicious · 02/11/2006 18:44

Yes this is my first. The dr just gave me a pack with a number to ring which gets me through to the midwife centre thing's ansaphone. No scan booked or anything.

With both of my pgs I didn't see a MW until after the first scan so about 13 weeks

cece · 02/11/2006 19:02

with ds I was 17 weeks before my booking in appointment. They usually don't do that till after your scan ime.

MumtoBen · 02/11/2006 20:18

In my area you don't get a 12 week scan. You have to pay privately. You need to find out if it is provided, as if not you'll need to consider arranging your own scan at a private hospital.

bumperlicious · 02/11/2006 20:39

Who books my first scan? Do I have to do it with the hospital directly? My doctor just gave me a bunch of leaflets and told me to call the midwife, who isn't getting back to. No-one has talked me through any of the tests, I don't know what I'm supposed to be doing! I know I sound manic so early on but I just feel really in the dark and left on my own. A page in my bunch of notes says that I have a scan at 12 weeks, but doesn't tell me who books it or where it is etc. The nuchal scans offered are only offered privately - is that usual? should I have one? I'm getting myself really worked up and taking it out on DH. I'm so tired and feeling so ill. Not a happy pregnant bunny at the moment [] You guys ar emy only source of information.

Different areas organise the care in different ways

I would suggest that if you haven't heard from your mw by 10 weeks go back to your GP and ask who books the scan

Nuchal scans are routine is some areas and not in others

First see a midwife around 12weeks at booking visit.
Nothing before that unless problems and even then it's not usually a midwife that you see.

spinningkittywheel · 03/11/2006 07:11

Hi, midwives usually don't get involved before your booking at about 10-12 weeks.
Where I am I phone the doctors to book my booking and then the midwife books in the scans.
This time round things have chnaged yet again and now they are giving us a list of our antenatal care schedule. Very organised

mears · 03/11/2006 07:25

Where I work women book directly with the midwife who books scan etc. The GP receptionist books the appointment. Does the ansaphone have a message telling you that you have got through to the midwife? If not, check with Dr that you have correct number. There is no rush about seeing midwife as it is early days however you should have got a response to your call.

megandsoph · 03/11/2006 07:33

I'm off to my booking appointment today and i'm 10.4 weeks. No one has booked me a scan. I will ask for some info about different areas today bumperlicious, although they will probs just tell me what mears has told you. I never had to contact the midwife they contacted me by post.

Could you contact your gp just to see what the game is??

moomimin · 03/11/2006 08:50

When I was in the uk with ds I saw no one about the pg before 14 weeks. That was a booking in appointment with the hospital. GP made that booking for me following a mention that I was pg but he wasn't interested that was at 6 weeks. In the south at the time it was one 20 week scan.

I live in France now and pg with no.3, here you don't even tell your gp. You just book in for a scan with your ob/gynacologist at 12 weeks the midwife then sees you from 16 weeks.

It's really early days yet, there is really nothing you should be doing or worried about untill about 11 weeks.

CurrantBun · 03/11/2006 15:28

I didn't get to see my midwife until I was 13 weeks. I saw my GP at 5 weeks when we first found out I was pregnant so that I could get 'in the system'. I had to phone the GP surgery several times to finally get hold of the midwife (I think at about 10 weeks) who told me she had just sent me some information in the post and that I would hear directly from the hospital re. the scan appointment as she had notified them to contact me. Never heard from the hospital and as nuchal scans need to be done between 11 and 13 weeks I booked this privately in the end.

It was all a bit disorganised to be honest, and I felt as though the onus was very much on me to chase things up and make them happen. At least I felt I was in control this way though - I just found it frustrating waiting for people to contact me.

PrettyCandles · 03/11/2006 15:32

Would expect to get a letter by about 9-10w with an appointment date for booking-in and dating scan at 10-12w, and wouldn't expect to see or hear from a m/w before then.

bumperlicious · 04/11/2006 15:59

Thanks everyone, I know I'm just fretting, and it's very early, but you just kind of get left in the dark, which is scary when it's your first. It's pretty bad (though fortunate) that I have to rely on you guys for my information. No-one has even explained to me any of the tests. I'll give it a couple of weeks then I will go and see my doctor again.

Thanks again for all the support.
