Scan at 6wks+5 but no heartbeat

I'm terrified. We tried really hard to conceive and eventually got pregnant on clomid after 18 months of trying, including a miscarriage. We had an early pregnancy scan today. I was told that we could expect to hear a heartbeat but there wasn't one. Gutted. I was told maybe the scan is too early and that I should come back for another one in a couple of weeks time. Or, I could be about to miscarry. 50/50 were her words.

I'm really scared. Has anyone been through something similar? Sad

How sure are you on your dates? I had a scan at 6+3 which was an empty sack....dated 4-5 weeks.....went back 3 weeks later and there he was 8+4 so only 6 days out of previous dates. Now 24+1 and at 22 week scan he was dating 6 days ahead but they haven't changed his due date, just reckon he's a big baby.
I hope your dates are out or baby is just a little slower in developing at this early stage as mine was x

Thanks s2, that's reassuring to hear. I wonder why the do them so early. I wish I had been booked in for a scan a week or so later.

I went through this a couple of months ago - it's horrible position to be in and I completely empathise with you.

I was referred for an early scan by the EPU after bad cramping at 6+3. There was no fetal pole, yolk sac or heartbeat - just a gestational sac. Was warned it was likely to be a mmc as I was certain my dates were correct, but had to return a week later for an additional scan to confirm. Returned at 7+2 - and a heartbeat was there! Everything was measuring spot on for dates. Apparently sometimes things develop slightly later than planned.

I'm now 15 weeks and everything appears to be perfect.

I hope you have a positive outcome.

Thank you , definitelynotelsa. There was a pole but she described the shape of the foetus as a 'diamond ring' so a bit elongated on one side where the f.pole is, which is how it should look at 6weeks. At 6+5, it should have been more round. It seems like there is a very small margin!

I'm really surprised they told you to expect a heartbeat at 6 wks. It is possible but I think 8 weeks is the time they would definitely expect to see one.
I'll share my experience. I had a scan at 7 wks. Saw a gestational sac, yolk sac & possibly a tiny fetal pole though sonographer wasn't positive. No heartbeat. Sac measured around 6 wks. I was told to come back in 10 days for a rescan.
Returned at 8 wks and lo & behold a tiny embryo with a heartbeat measuring bang on dates.
It sounds as though you might just have been too early. You may have ovulated later than you thought which could put your dates back a little.
Did the sonographer tell you what they actually saw? Are you booked in for a rescan?

She showed me on the screen that there is a yolk sac and a fetal pole but there was no heart beat. I'm booked in for another scan in two weeks time.

Well from what you've described it sounds positive as everything was there. Really similar to my experience at the same time.
My sonography wasn't negative at all though! Just said it was a little early to see the heartbeat & also said that the measurements can be out by a week either side due to the size, therefore at this point it's only a rough guide. It was a tough 10 days waiting for my next scan so I feel for you. From what you've said though it all sounds ok for 6 wks ish. I think the sonographer was just trying to prepare you for the worse possible outcome.

Thought I'd update- had a second scan, this time 8 weeks since last period. Still no heartbeat but fetus has grown and is more or less the right size for gestation. Conclusion was that it's not a viable pregnancy. Gutted. Will have a scan to confirm on Friday and discuss options. Sad

Didn't want to read and run. What horrible news, I'm really sorry to hear this. My thoughts are with you.
