Flashing lights and black spots but no pre-eclampsia

I'm 23ish weeks and for my whole pregnancy I've had floating black spots and flashing lights in my eyes. It's starting to get worse now but my blood pressure is fine and my urine is clear. Does anyone have any idea why this could be happening? I never had it during my last pregnancy and it's driving me crazy.

Could it be a detached retina? I think you need to see a doctor or optician.

I spoke to the midwife and she wasn't concerned (due to the low bp and clear urine). It's in both eyes so not a detached retina but I've got a GP appointment tomorrow so I'll mention it then.

Go and get your eyes tested, if you get a lot of floaters all of a sudden or black 'curtain' over your vision go to a hospital eye department asap.

Bugger. I will, thank you.

Get your eyes tested. One of my friends just spontaneously had both retinas detach.

I had something similar and rang the NHS number and they referred me to the emergency dept of the local eye hospital. Spent an evening being poked and prodded and got a clean bill of health, but it was definitely worth checking - detached retinas need to be repaired straight away.

Definitely get your eyes checked asap. It is hopefully nothing, but you need to rule out retina problems.

Get your eyes checked, and talk to your doc about the possibility of migraine as well :)

applecore0317 · 07/04/2015 09:53

I had this and when I spoke to the optician he confirmed migraines. Sometimes I would get it and then a headache would come on and other times it was completely pain free. Still needed to lay in a dark room though.

Definitely think you should get checked out by a doctor, even if the midwife says it's ok, just in case.
It does sound like migraine aura though, and migraines are common in pregnancy even if you aren't a sufferer normally.
Some migraines don't get the headache part. My OH and Dad both get the aura, but no headache. Flashing lights and black spots - as though you've looked at the sun, or looked at bright lights reflecting on something that makes it difficult to focus afterwards.
I get the works, but that is a whole other thread!!

Everyone can get black floaters at times but if it's only happened since you've been pregnant I'd defo get it checked also flashing lights could be a sign of detached retina as previously said ^ (work in an opticians) I'm also quite surprised a midwife hasn't told you to get it checked. Good luck.
