Am I worrying for nothing- 12 week scan

Hello,

I posted this on the AIBU board but I'm not sure it was the right place for it,

Basically (and I'm sure you have heard this all before) but I'm seriously worried about my 12 week scan next week.

This is my first pregnancy, planned, wanted (badly) and we are really happy, but I can't shake this nagging feeling that healthy pregnancies and babies are just somethings that happen to other people. I have had a good pregnancy up til now, plenty of symptoms and no bleeding. But we have never heard our baby's heartbeat or even seen the baby. I keep fixating on what could be wrong.

I do suffer from a bit of anxiety, especially around medical tests, and we have had pregnancies in the family in recent years that all ended in miscarriage, they were very public pregnancies too (everyone in the family knew about them and were fussy and excited) only to be snatched away. We haven't told anyone we are expecting for fear of it happening to us.

I feel bad because everyone says this should be an exciting, special time and I can't do anything but worry and want to hide away :( .

I thought I would be ok if I made it to this point but then I learned about MMC and thought- what could be more cruel? you survive all this time and then you get to your scan and everything falls apart.. it just seems unbearable.

I wish I could be more relaxed about it...

The Anxiety over scans is all to normal, I'd be more concerned if you weren't worried. I had fortnightly scans after my 12wk one and the anxiety never left me. I just had to learn to manage it. Good luck xx

Hey Rosy,
Just dropping in to update you, my scan is tomorrow and I'm now officially freaking out. I went on Google (bad I know) and now I'm off the chart terrified! I just wanted you
To know we're in it together. I feel better that people have commented on your thread saying it's rare. Xx

rosy189 · 06/04/2015 10:16

Aw ladypug! your are hereby banned from google! every time I think of going on it I get a knot in my stomach and I go do something else to take my mind off googling!
We are in it together for sure, I'm really looking forward to hearing how it went for you! what time is your scan? mine is first thing weds morning so I dont have to wait long at all!
I do feel better that people have said that MMC is more uncommon but still freaking out badly!

I should say as well, my sickness is back with a vengeance and I have back cramps today, not helping me stay relaxed for the scan! :(

Aww cramps sound painful! Mine is at 3.30pm so forever to wait! Will post when I get home though to let you know how it went! X

Sparrowlegs248 · 06/04/2015 14:40

Good luck both of you with your scans. I had cramp type pains quite a lot early on, but rarely get them now. Its normal according to my GP - pelvic congestion, where more blood flows to your many making parts.

Sparrowlegs248 · 06/04/2015 14:43

Oops that should say baby making parts!

Also, I found that while this forum can provide a wealth of great information, you also read the sadder stories which is awful. I know much more about the bad stuff that can happen since joining MN. Its good to be informed but it can also fuel the worry.

rosy189 · 07/04/2015 10:16

Thanks for the advice Nottalotta, I have been trying the carefully select which posts to read while collecting a healthy amount of research so I can be prepared of anything does go wrong, I've just got today to get through then scan is at 8.30 tomorrow morning.

Good luck today LadyPug! I will be thinking of you and looking forward to hearing how you got on later! xxxxxx

Thank you - eeeeek! Counting down x

nehagarg · 07/04/2015 11:33

Absolutely in the same boat as you and everyone else here Rosy. I cannot even begin to understand the bravery of the women that go through MMCs. No one should have to go through that.

I am at 10 weeks right now and have my 12 week scan on the 25th. Feels like time is standing still. Absolutely terrified. I think banning myself from Google and other sites is the first step, as Jade suggests!

Good luck tomorrow. I am sure all will go brilliantly. :)

rosy189 · 07/04/2015 11:45

Thanks so much nehagarg, congratulations on your pregnancy I hope you have a good scan, I work from home and I have things due for clients but I'm finding it so hard to focus!
I just think mmc is so cruel, and you are right no one should have to go through it!
I will be sure to post how mine goes!

All will be well. Good luck Rosy.

Ladypug · 08/04/2015 07:07

Good luck today Rosy, thinking of you! X

whereswaldo · 08/04/2015 07:50

Rosey I felt exactly the same as you- was almost hysterical at the 12 wk scan but everything was more than fine and I measured ahead! I truly think that people are more likely to post about bad experiences than good and that can skew your impression. As someone on the September board said to me- a missed miscarriage is reasonably rare. Good luck

rosy189 · 08/04/2015 09:51

Hi ladies,

thank you for all your encouragement and messages they meant the world to me,

we just got home now, our scan went more than perfectly and I feel so silly for getting so worried!
We had a shy little baby who put their hands up to their face when we were trying to have a look! I burst into tears when the sonographer lady told us the heartbeat was strong and the kidneys were working well, baby had a little wriggle and waved at us!

amazing experience and I feel so SO lucky!

xxxxx
