Hi girls, does anyone know if smoked salmon is ok to eat during pregnancy? The one that comes ready to eat. Internet says different things... I've eaten a sandwich with it just now but feeling a bit uneasy now...

I'm sure it's fine.

I believe it's to do with how it's cured.
The US way isn't safe but I can't remember the differences. Hopefully someone with a better brain than me will come along and help reassure you better than I Easter Confused

Hot smoked - yes.
Cold smoked - no, not ideal.

However, you've eaten it now. No point worrying about it. In fact the chances of anything bad happening as a result of this, is very low.

AFAIK, the guidelines over what can & can't safely be eaten during pregnancy a) are mostly very recent, and b) vary significantly from one country to another.

Try not to worry - chances are, it will have made no difference whatsoever.

When in doubt, look at the NHS website.

And relax! It'll be a long 9 months if you worry constantly! I can say this because I am 10 weeks and like to worry a lot too Grin

Its ok but only a few times a week. I checked this as I love the stuff, nhs website says that farmed salmon carries an extremely low risk of having parasites

Smoked salmon is safe in pregnancy. I've had some for lunch today, I don't have it often but it's nice for a treat

FlumptyDumpty · 03/04/2015 15:18

My consultant obstetrician told me it was fine. The smoking process kills any nasties. So enjoy!

Well I'm making smoked salmon fishcakes for dinner and have eaten it prior to this and all is fine. We're told to avoid certain fish due to the mercury

Thank you so much girlies. I feel much better and going to indulge in the second sandwich now! Grin

Most shop-bought smoked salmon has also been frozen so even lower risk. It's fine, enjoy!

Don't worry about it now. Just avoid if from now on if you're uncomfortable with the idea.

If it helps, I was pre-12 weeks and went away on a business trip, got a total hankering for food and long story short I scoffed a whole mini packet of M&S smoked salmonBlush It was tasty tho!
