Ellbell · 31/10/2006 20:13

So sorry to hear this Yorkiegirl. How many weeks is your SIL now? All I can say in reassurance is that the steroids are supposed to make a huge difference. (I had them and the nurses working on NNICU said that even one dose can be a life-saver.) Wish I could be more helpful. I am thinking of you and your SIL. Keeping this bumped for you.

Does your SIL feel that she is leaking fluid? When the ywere investigating today did they say if she is?

If its due to a small hole in the membranes then liquor levels can fluctuate as more amniotic fluid is always been produced.

The doctors would probably want to keep doing regular scans to monitor the situation closely. Are the steroids more to do with helping baby's lungs to mature? Incase they decide to deliver early. Baby doesn't need its lungs at the minute in the same way we do, they get oxygen via the placenta. I think the oligo can restrict development of the lungs, but this is different to them been crushed. However I can understand its still a worrying time.

Gillian76 · 31/10/2006 20:32

Just spotted mears on another thread...

Marina · 31/10/2006 20:33

YG, really sorry to hear this.
Is there any chance the growth could be a fibroid...not pleasant but not a serious health hazard for SIL, once diagnosed and known about?
In their position I would press for referral asap to a regional centre for excellence in fetal medicine - for London and the SE it is Professor Nicolaides at the Harris at King's College.

foundintranslation · 31/10/2006 20:34

oligohydramnios

111kylie111 · 31/10/2006 20:37

I am so sorry. I cant help but il keep it Bumped in hope someone who can help see this.

Blu · 31/10/2006 20:42

YG, I'm very sad to hear this, for your bro and SIL, and for you.

I second what Marina says about perhaps looking for a referral to one of the specialist centres - and certainly the hrris birthright Trust in King's, as Marina mentions, is very good. Amniotic fluid is constantly produced under normal circumstances, is ther any chance that it will top itself up?

lulumama · 31/10/2006 20:51

This sounds dreadful! I keep hearing tragic stories these days, there doesn't seem to be any good news lately! Not for anyone!

You must be so worried, I hope and pray that everything will turn out ok for her.
