My bro and bil both work at Oldham Hospital but in totally different areas of health so I don't think they would be of much help I'm afraid.

Sorry to hear about this. My friend had little fluid around her dd and all I know was she was born weighing a pound and a half less than her older brother. My friend and her dh are very tall and she was expected to have large babies. She did not have any other problems, they knew about this from about 20 weeks, steriods were mentioned yet for her it seemed to be an option. To what degree it was worrying the mws though I do not know, just wanted you to know it happened and her dd was and is fine.

Good luck with everything.

Hi YG

I had this with DS1. However it wasn't noticed till nearer 28wks. Even though I was always small for dates.

They did fetal heart monitoring every other day and regular scans to check the growth & condition of the baby. DS1 was delivered by cs at 34wks weighing 2lbs 10oz. Basically the size of a 28weeker. I had two steroid injections to mature his lungs in the 3 days before he was born. He was in special care for 3 weeks but only because he was so small and they cannot regulate their body temp. Apart from that he was fine - no breathing problems or developmental problems and is now a happy healthy 3yr old.

Sorry if that's a bit jumbled just writing as i think. If you want to know anything else just ask.

I'm now pregnant with no2 due in April and they will be scanning me every 2-4 wks to check the growth of baby.

Hope your sil is ok. Thinking of them and you.

Yorkiegirl - this is really difficult to advise on when you do not know all the facts. How many weeks is your SIL now? Anomally scans are usually done around the 20 week mark. To have reduced liquopr volume at this stage is not a good sign.

Steroids will not encourage the baby to turn - your SIL has picj=ked this up wrongly. What they will do is help the lungs mature. There will need to be further investigations as to why there is reduced fluid - this could be due to a number of reasons.

She may have reduced fluid because her waters have actually broken - it depends how many weeks she now is as to the outcome. Baby's need the fluif to fill the lungs to help them develop.

I am not sure about the growth at all. The only advice that you can go on is that which is provieded by the hospital.

It sounds quite an unusual circumstance and I am sorry that I cannot provide any reassurances

Yorkiegirl, so sorry to hear this for your brother. How many weeks is your SIL??

I had v. low fluids with DS(1). Around 2cm this was at 19 wk scan (which I had early as tripple test was 1 in 60). I'm afraid for us, that DS(1), Robert, was born at 20wks. But Dr. had advised that it was v. unlikely that he would survive the pregnancy as the babies need at least 7cm at 30 wks (my facts should be checked as I was a bit distressed at the time) for lung development.

If they are talking steriods, etc. it sounds promising. as we didn't get any of this (my mat hospital was Rosie in Cambridge and v. good) as it wouldn't have helped.

So if you know the level of fluid and how many weeks, it helps figure out the chances.

My thoughts are with you all.

BTW -- went on to have DS(2) 13 mths later, who is now a v. energetic 2 yr old.

Consultant is shocking

Don't be surprised though, if when they go to private healthcare - this consultant is listed as one of the choices, but there should be other OBGYN consultants to choose from.

23 weeks sounds more promising than 20 weeks though.

binkacat · 02/11/2006 19:17

It is 3cm. Normal is between 5-25cm.

Forgetting the fluid for a minute - what's her bump measuring. Is she ok for dates?

USAUKMum · 02/11/2006 19:54

Yes they are measured in cm. Normally they divide the womb into 4 quadrants, measure one and multiply by 4 to get the total volume of fluid. Fluid peaks around 28wksish - 32 wks and is steady from there until full-term (37- 40 wks). when it starts to decline. Largest amt of lung development is in the mid-20s.

The big question will be why she has reduced fluid. PROM is one reason (premature rupture of membranes), but could also be a defect in the baby (most oftn renal or urinary as fluid is made from baby's urine or possibly other).

If they need/want a genetic test, it will probably have to be a CVS as they might not have enough fluid for an amino.

Sounds as if the lack of fluid hasn't impacted on the development. With my son he had so little fluid that it lead to physical deformaties (people are designed to be formed in water).

Most often they recommend bedrest. Experimental is to inject sterile saline into womb. Some studeis show if the mother drinks 2L of water this can boost fluid levels.

She should be closely monitored for both fluid levels and baby growth. They will probably try to keep baby in for as long as poss, but babe may need to be born early.

Hope she gets to a dr soon -- and new hospital.

My thoughts are with you and your family.
