BTW -- i'm not medical in anyway, but this was just stuff I learned through my own experience.

I am sorry your SIL isn't getting better support from her consultant by speaking to her. She needs to understand the whole picture and know what is going on. To have reduced liquor at this atge is a poor sign as there may indeed be something wrong with the baby. Was the detailed scan OK? There are some condistions where a lack of fluid is because the kidneys are not developed. If there is very little fluid round the baby then the lungs may be very poorly developed and steroids won't really help.

On the other hand since there is talk of steroids and early delivery, perhaps abnormaility has been ruled out.

Sorry to still not have much reassurance to give.

I was in hospital with a lady who had low levels of fluid, and was leaking she was hospitalised till they induced her at I think 35 weeks, baby was fine, had the steriods. Very worrying for family though at the time.
I hope your SIL can get some good care and definate bed rest. My friend was checked evry few hours for fluid.

I had leaking waters with DS; this was in the States, and diagnosed at 29 weeks. I was put on bed-rest in hospital immediately, and checked daily for fluid levels. The baby was monitored twice daily, i/v antibiotics given, steroid injections - really detailed care, and I managed to hang on for 8 weeks with just enough fluids. DS was born OK by c/s.

I am pregnant again now, in the UK - 18 weeks. I have seen a midwife, followed by a consultant (v briefly) precisely once at 13 weeks. She was adamant that they would give no extra care or consideration to me before 25 weeks because there would be no hope for the baby even if it was known that my waters were leaking - nothing they could do. She would not be drawn as to what extra care I could expect after 25 weeks.

How much this is a financial decision I don't know. It has been a very anxious time since I don't know what might be happening inside, and won't have any info until my anomaly scan in a couple of weeks.

So sorry to have only depressing news. I can only suggest lots of bedrest, and we'll all be thinking of your SIL.

Have just seen USAUKMum's post, and agree about the advice to drink at least 2 litres of water a day if the problem is PROM. I was told to do this in the States, and did, and my fluid levels remained acceptable even though tests proved that I was still leaking. (Needless to say my UK consultant just scoffed at the idea, but better safe than sorry).

Yorkiegirl how are you doing? Is your SIL doing okay? Just thinking of you.
