Sweeps-positive experiences?

39+6 today and had sweep down this am at consultant. Had bishop score of 9- nearly fully effaced, soft cervix and 2cm dialated.

This is my second baby. Couldn't have sweep done with first as so unfavourable- was Induced at 12 days over with her- had pessary, 3 lots of gel and then drip ending in 19 hr labour with forceps/ epidiotomy and then PPH.

Am keen to hear any positive experiences of sweeps starting things? Since my sweep this am I have quite back back ache and mild cramps- is this looking good??

Am heading to my midwife appointment this afternoon and seriously hoping my BS is above six so the sweep will move things along.

Am 40+5 and if I've still got ages I won't be happy. Envy

I had a sweep at 40+1. Cervix was still high, posterior, 1cm long and only 1cm dilated. Midwife managed to do it somehow, and DS was born at 40+2. :) So they definitely can work!! Good luck :)

Id been having some contractions so went in (DC2, 39+5). Was 2cm and MW said if itwas my first id have been sent home but as it was my second she would do a sweep. DC2 arrived about 2 hours later.

The first time they tried to do a sweep for me I had to ask them to stop because it hurt, a few days later they tried again, by which point I was a couple of cm and mostly effaced, i didn't feel a thing and ds arrived 36 hrs later. Had serious contractions in the car on the way home though so if there's anyone who can drive you it might be worth it just in case!

Just out. She said I'm 2cm long and that a sweep wouldn't be effective. So induction has been booked. Another 9 days before I have to go in but still feeling frustrated. Sad

I had a sweep at 39+5, didn't feel anything till 2 days later when little dd was born in 35 mins Grin

I had a sweep done with dc 2. I went into labour an hour after having it done

APinkHardHat · 31/03/2015 15:52

Had a sweep 3pm Thursday afternoon at 40+5, contractions started in earnest about 9pm and DD was born 5.30 Friday morning. I told the midwife she had magic hands! Good luck

I had a failed sweep at 40+5 with my second. The doctor said DD wasn't engaged so he had nothing to push against to do the sweep IYSWIM.

I came home, napped, had lots of period type backache, was generally achey. Slept fine. Went in next day for induction. Less than 30 hours after my failed sweep I was 4cm dilated and they were able to break my waters. Had to wait for a room in order for them to do ARM, but DD was born 5 hours later.

I'm not sure there's any actual evidence that they work, but they can give you an idea of how your cervix is looking, and cramps/backache is a good sign.

Just to update - sweep at 11, baby Jack born after 20 min labour at 22.22 day before his due date!
Guessing I'll add to the positive experiences now Grin
