No bump at 20 weeks

I am 20+5 now and it is slightly strange to me that I still have no bump. I thought my stomach had rounded slighlty but when I breathe in I can almost have a flat stomach again. I feel quite worried by this as people keep commenting that there is 'no way' I could be five months pregnant and its making me feel very consious.
I had my 20 week scan last week and the midwife said the baby measurements were fine for this stage so no problem with the baby, and I must just have good stomach muscles. I am also 5'9 tall if this makes a difference and pregnant with my first.
Has anyone else been in this situation? Having an almost non exsistent bump at this stage?!

I was huge at 20 weeks. Same height as you. My friend only looked about 20 weeks (slight roundness) the day she went into labour (similar height). People just carry differently. As long as midwife is happy just ignore. 'I'm measuring perfectly' and repeat! Everyone has an opinion unfortunately. Later you may get to comments too small, too big, is it twins all in the same day. Confused

Sanch1 · 30/03/2015 09:15

I didnt have a bump until about 22 weeks with my first. I got chubbier because I was eating for 10 but no actual discernable bump for ages, you'll find it just suddenly 'pops' out!

Dizzyfatbird · 30/03/2015 09:27

Hi, don't worry...I'm 27 weeks and under the consultant, he told me last week my bump looks so small because I'm taller (longer torso) baby is fine (I'm having growth scans fortnightly) ab muscles are also strong another factor - am still being told by the general public I can't be as pregnant as I think tho! Smile

Foggymist · 30/03/2015 09:30

I didn't have a bump until about 33 weeks. I'm 5ft8, my mum is shorter than me and barely had a bump at 38 weeks. You're tall and medical professionals aren't concerned so why bother giving any thought to what random people say?

SunnyR · 30/03/2015 09:32

Thank you all for your much needed reassurance!
I know you are right Foggymist, I have just been slightly anxious because I haven't even felt baby movement yet. But I suppose if the midwife was happy then I need to try and relax!

I was the same.

by about 24 weeks-ish(?) (struggling to remember!) my body started changing in the sense that my bump popped out but everything else skinnied down. don't get me wrong, it was always a "tidy", small bump but definitely noticeable. like a football under my top. I weighed the same at my last midwife appt. as I did at my first.

DS was born at 39+4 a healthy 7lbs 8.5oz. there was A LOT of water too so pretty amazing what can be hidden in there.

SunnyR · 30/03/2015 10:42

Thank you for the helpful and reasurring advice! Its true you can hide alot in there! I was amazed at the 20 week scan!

I'm 21+1 and don't have much of a bump at all. Had 20wk scan last week and baby is exactly where he should be in terms of growth. I've just put it down to the fact that I'm tall and fat and so can hide it better! It's been very useful in terms of keeping it from nosy people at work... Wink

WindYourBobbinUp · 30/03/2015 12:19

I was the same as you with my 1st, I think a long torso and strong muscles can hide a lot! I too got upset at comments, especially when people hinted there was something wrong with the baby. If your scans measure fine that's the main thing and is much more accurate than the tape measure round the belly.
If you saw the baby moving at the scan too that's fine. I felt my first kicks with my first a few weeks after. If your placenta is at the front it can make them harder to feel too

Feckeggblue · 30/03/2015 12:21

I had strong abs too. Unfortunately they seemed to split about the same time as you and a bump erupted really quickly! I'm sure you don't want that but do bear in mind things can change overnight :)

SunnyR · 31/03/2015 11:34

Thank you for sharing your experiences they definitley make me feel better during this unsure time!

OP I'm 5ft 9 & slim. I felt like a complete fraud going to my 20w scan. My bump appears a couple of weeks later.

Arkkorox · 31/03/2015 11:53

I didn't even know I was pregnant till 34 weeks so youre not alone in not having a bump! in hindsight a bump would have been bloody useful!

BinToHellAndBack · 31/03/2015 12:09

When my mum had my brother she wanted to keep her pregnancy hidden as her work treated unmarried pregnant ladies atrociously.

Thankfully for her she barely had a bump at any point, she wore her normal clothes throughout, and nobody ever guessed! She also had a perfectly flat stomach the moment the baby popped out (sadly didn't pass that ability on to me though!).

So long as your scans etc are on-track really don't worry Smile

TreadSoftlyOnMyDreams · 31/03/2015 12:16

My stomach popped at 21 weeks which was handy as I skied at 20 weeks.
Kate Middleton is still tiny. You guys are in the lucky space :-)

Littlepig8834 · 31/03/2015 13:07

I was the same, nothing at 20 weeks, I even posted on here about it. I am currently 25 weeks and I have a bump but not a massive one. One person at work thought I was only 3 months gone!
It is concerning, especially when people comment about it being 'too small' but my midwife told me all my measurements were fine and due to being tall (I'm 5ft 10) I won't show as much as others. I also have been told I have good stomach muscles, where these came from I do not know, as I am not a gym bunny at all!
If the midwife is happy and all is ok at your scans, don't worry. It has taken me up until now to realise that all pregnancies are different and just because one women looks a certain size at a certain stage it doesn't mean we all will.

Buttercup27 · 31/03/2015 13:10

I didn't get a bump until 33 weeks. I carried transverse so no one could tell I was pregnant. People just thought I was putting on a little weight. At 33 weeks d's turned and all if a sudden I had a big bump. The same happened with ds2.

cheetarah · 31/03/2015 13:15

I had no bump at all at 20 wk scan, and no one at work has noticed I'm pregnant. Now almost 24 weeks, on hols for the week and bump has literally visibly busted out over the past 4/5 days. Guess my stomach muscles have now packed it in! I'm sure it's fine if measured fine at the 20 wk scan, count yourself lucky!

mumxof3x · 31/03/2015 14:45

Im 33weeks with my 4th 5'6 and was quite skinny pre preg, I still barely have a bump. So far no one has really noticed and I didnt tell family until 23-24 week. Midwife says I have a long torso and good tummy muscles. Been same in all of my pregnancys and ds2 was quite a good size at 9ib. Everyones totally different :)

geekymommy · 31/03/2015 16:08

I never had an obvious bump with DD. She's now 2.5 and healthy. I'm 23+5 now, and again no bump. I'm overweight, not tall or particularly fit. I guess it's just how my body does things.
