im 37 plus3 today and have just had a midwife appointment.i was a bit put out as i havent had one since 32 weeks and i had a studant today.my midwife was around but not interested at all. i have a lot of questions i wanted to go through but couldnt with the studant.she mesaured me and they both agreed the baby was on the small side but didnt do anything about it. they also said that in relation to the brim i was 3/5 what does that mean?also as i havent had a lot of movements i have been told to count them and phone labour wards if less than 10 a day. im not sure what to count as a movement. and now im scared help

hi there try not panic 3/5 means how much the head is engaged which is a gud thing!!! Wot measament did they give you?
A kick a prod i think any thing basically classes as a movement!! xx

lulumama · 31/10/2006 11:36

ok....
3/5 means the baby's head is partially engaged in the pelvis....5/5 is fully engaged...so baby is getting ready to go!

palpating the abdomen and measuring the fundal height of the uterus gives an indication of weight..but it is not an exact science.do you recall what the fundal height was..usually corresponds in centimetres to the number of weeks you are......

i am sure if baby v. small...the midwife would have taken some further action...

10 movements a day is to be expected and a kick or wriggle or anything that feels like the baby is moving is ok.....

when you are busier , you tend to feel less as not concetrating..and baby has quiet times and also , at this stage, not a whole lot of room to move

if you are scared and feel that you need more reassurance..call the midwife or labour ward...you should not leave an appointment feeling like this...

HTH!

The fact that the midwife had a student with them should make no odds to the care you recieve - was it that you felt unable to ask or because the midwife was teaching the student? Is there anyway you could ring her and ask some of your questions? It's quite important that you feel happy about things. The later you are in your pregnancy the less the baby moves, it is normal so as long as you are getting 10 movements a day. How to measure it is difficult - DS used to come alive at night, but even so I would still get the odd movement during the day. Hopefully someone a bit more clever will be along soon!

thanks the measurment was 35 but again the studant did it while the midwife was out of the room.so im not even sure that was right.my midwife did say that the low movements and small baby could be to do with the placenta and i must phone labour wards if less than 10 in 12 hours.i feel a bit silly as this is my 2nd baby but im less confident this time than the first.he was 8lb 8 and i got induced at 39 plus 5 after he wasnt moving alot.

eeek! sorry.....5/5 is not engaged!! 0/5 is fully engaged!!

your baby's head is partially engaged....2/5 of it below the brim....

lisalewis · 31/10/2006 11:44

thanks frekeyfloss it was mainly that my midwife was in and out of the room all the time. she didnt even stay with me while the studant was doing all of my obs.i was really looking forward to my appointment as it had been so long since my previous one.

so they have scared you a bit...not good.

measuring 35 at 37 weeks is not the end of the world...

need to measure 10 movements in 12 hours...

there is no real reason that your placenta would be deteriorating so much at 37 weeks....

i take it there was a strong foetal heartbeat? that is an excellent indicator of foetal health....

lisalewis · 31/10/2006 11:46

thanks lulumama.at least i now know what that means. does this really mean anything? will it be soon i go into labour or can it still take forever?

OP posts:
lisalewis · 31/10/2006 11:47

yeah the heartbeat was there.and really fast so i supose that is a good sign.

35 is ok at 37 weeks im 40+2 and my measurements are 37.5 my mdwife sed that as the baby is engaged you cant get an accurate reading so as your baby is engaged abit that prob y you measuring slightly less xx

WaitingForGodKnows · 31/10/2006 11:50

Agree with lulumama (except that 1/5 is fully engaged, isn't it??) If the head is engaging then that may be a reason for you measuring smaller. The head will be down in the pelvis and therefore your bump will have 'dropped' a little, iyswim. 3/5 means that they can feel 3/5ths of the baby's head above the brim of your pelvis. It's definitely a bit of a subjective measurement (especially if a student was doing it )

Did the mw listen for the fetal heart, and did she seem happy? In any case, she should have answered your questions and addressed your concerns, it's not enough to just say 'Oh, it's probably the placenta' !! My advice would be to call labour ward if you are still unhappy.

WaitingForGodKnows · 31/10/2006 11:50

Ooops, took so long to post that I've x-posted with everyone!

lulumama · 31/10/2006 11:50

if this is your second child...then it can be a positive sign as a 2nd baby sometimes doesn't engage until labour starts...my DD was 3/5 engaged for 6 weeks..born on her due date!! she was my second....

38 weeks is classed as full term...so who knows? babies come when they are ready!

lisalewis · 31/10/2006 11:51

OP posts:
lisalewis · 31/10/2006 11:56

well youngmum21 i hope things start moving for you soon.have you been trying anything to help bring the labour on?

OP posts:
lulumama · 31/10/2006 11:58

it's hard to say lisa....can depend on the family history- eg what gestation yu & your siblings were born at......we were all early & on time as were DH so that can give an indication...

at the moment..at 37 weeks. in utero should be the best place for baby......it does get hard at the end...but babies tend to be born when they are ready...not the same as when we want them to come

if there is no real indication of placental decline....baby is best inside you !

youngmum21 · 31/10/2006 12:02

thanks lisa!! yep ive tried spicey food, sex, raspberry leaf tabs, walking and nothing is working at the min!!!!
I hope you feel a bit better now i sometimes panic about how many movements i get but she soon starts wiggling and poking me!!!!
