I have told family/friends some of the names I have liked only to have been faced with wrinkled noses and disapproving looks or sometimes they just suggest something different!! I liked Oscar but was told it sounded like a dog and I liked Esme only to be told it sounds like the name of the unpopular fat girl that you can imagine noone would like at school??!!!!? I wanted something quite unusual in the way that it wasn't going to become over popular but it seems my choices are not that great!! Anyone else chosen their name syet....??

Ah, I knew it was one of those old fashioned M ones.

Tex, I like to old names too - I love Arthur, Ernest, Archie, Albert in particular. DH has vetoed roughly 99 of the 100 names I've suggested for boys. But he likes Alec, which I could live with. As to girl names, he's not too bothered. I love Beatrice, Ruth, Hannah, Audrey.

Tinker, eeeeeekkk (re the gerbils, yuck yuck yuck)
tomkitty, Alec is a gorgeous name, go for it!!
There's a little girl in dd's class called Kizzy, is that a 'usual' name? (Sounds like Kissy to me, weird)

I had gerbils called Frieda and Matilda. they had many babies, only ate a few of them!

love the name Matilda still even though the gerbil Matilda had to become Matt after her sex change.

Fennel - i believe the PC term is gender reassignment

I chose dd1's name which is Amie but i wish i had just left it at Amy as lots of people get confused when trying to spell it in birthday/xmas cards and it tends to annoy me but it's my fault anyway!
My dd2's name was much easier to plan,i had it shortlisted to Hannah,Evie, ava and Jasmine and when she was born i asked dh which one he liked the best and he chose Jasmine which i loved anyway so kinda tricked him into thinking he chose it ! Chose the names you love but be carefull as mentioned before the child has to live with it for the rest of their life or until they are old enough to change it by deed poll!

I am trying to pick a name thats not in the top 100 names in the past 3 years, as I have a relatively unique name and quite like being different, although totally understand everyones problems with spelling one off names.

Problems is I like so many of the names in the list - bugger

beansprout · 30/04/2004 17:28

Tinker - lol at the gerbils!!

I am currently compiling a list of I-don't-think so names, to act as a decoy, as already I cannot be a*sed with people asking me and then not liking what I say. "Bod" heads the list, and I will also add (with a straight face) that the great thing is that it is unisex so suits either way.

Older names are coming back into fashion 'round here too - lots of Archies, Olivers, Harrys etc

I am not pregnant yet !!!(not for want of trying) I have a Amy and Christopher - Amy because it means 'beloved' and Christopher because its timeless and suits all ages.

If I had another one, my choices would be
Girl: Harriet, Holly or Amelia
Boy: Thomas or Elliot we would choose George as a middle name (family ties) our surname begins with a G so if I choose Elliott it would have the initials EGG - perhaps not !!!
