I have told family/friends some of the names I have liked only to have been faced with wrinkled noses and disapproving looks or sometimes they just suggest something different!! I liked Oscar but was told it sounded like a dog and I liked Esme only to be told it sounds like the name of the unpopular fat girl that you can imagine noone would like at school??!!!!? I wanted something quite unusual in the way that it wasn't going to become over popular but it seems my choices are not that great!! Anyone else chosen their name syet....??

Molly is my best friends dog too - but s'pose that doesn't really matter as you don't know her!!

Natt · 28/04/2004 15:37

My niece and nephew are Oscar and Molly, they are both brilliant names and lovely kids. Don't think Esme saounds like fat girl at all, is a beautiful name. There is a lovely JD Salinger short story about an Esme...

sponge · 28/04/2004 16:38

We have an Esme at work and she's the life and soul - so no fat girl connotations for me.
The bump is currently called Harry and dd keeps stroking and kissing it and telling me she loves Harry so it'll probably stick. DH wants Horatio as a middle name (after charatcter in CSI Miami!) so that he can be H cubed (surname is also an H).
If it was a girl we were going to call it Lucy Ella, but seems pretty clearly a boy.

miracleabie · 29/04/2004 11:12

when my siter was pg the consultant told her the baby was the size of a bean so throughout her 3 pregnancies she and BIL called:
no1 aduki, no2 pinto and no3 baked. They all got reasonable names once born!!!

CountessDracula · 29/04/2004 11:15

Old fashioned names are definitely "in" at the moment - we were in the playground the other day and there was a Mabel, an Archie, an Alfie, a Fred and my dd whose name could be construed as old fashioned I guess. Mabel made me laugh though! Soon Doris and Ethel will be top of the lists at this rate

bundle · 29/04/2004 11:20

dh still prefers Nancy to the name we did choose for dd2.

Sorry to be a party pooper .............but can i just make a polite but gentle reminder here that you are not just naming a baby, you are giving your son or daughter a name for life. Lots of names are cute on a 2yo, less so on a spotty teenager or middle aged joiner/neurosurgeon/teacher/whatever.........

Try it out - Professor Coco May Smith??? But then, she will probably use Prof C May Smith

Ok I will sit back now and wait for the flames (retires to the air raid shelter at the bottom of the garden)

And no, i'm not telling you my name in RL

CountessDracula · 29/04/2004 11:29

Dd's nanny looked after a little boy called Coco. Poor sod

Jaybee · 29/04/2004 13:55

Have to agree with you Lesley - much as I love lots of unusual names I don't think I could do it myself.

Freddiecat · 29/04/2004 13:56

Every time I suggest a name for this baby DP turns his nose up. When DS was born DP suggested his name after 2 days and I loved it but DP took another 5 WEEKS to decide, so we couldn't name him or register him. This time I really want to choose sooner - mainly for DS's sake as otherwise he'll think it's called baby for weeks. There is no hurrying DP though.

I decided Ella would be a lovely name but DS is called Sam and calling them in from the garden would be like declaring I have food poisoning.

Tex111 · 29/04/2004 14:15

I love the old names too and Maud, Oscar, Harriet, Arthur, Albert, etc make up most of our list of possibles. Also have Finlay for a little modernity but our surname starts with F so not sure. DS is Tobias John which I think is a good balance of traditional but uncommon, though I keep hearing more and more Tobys!

DP's current girl favourite is Thelma! Not sure about that one.

katzguk · 29/04/2004 14:33

hi i wanted a Genevieve, Evie for short but married someone with a surname beginning with G so rules out on initials being GG not good!!

I like Oscar as a boys name too but just in case your not a neighbours fan the new scully baby is called oscar ossie for short!

Next time round i would like:
Girl: Ella/Eden/Amelia/Elloiuse
Boy: Jarred/Oliver/Thomas/Issac

Twinkie · 29/04/2004 14:42

katzgut - I know 3 Jarreds and they are all gay - ntohign wrong with being gay but it is just super bizzare!!

Jaybee · 29/04/2004 14:45

Freddiecat - we had the same problem - Eleanor was on our shortlist for ages until we realised that the shortened version did not go with our Sam - we ended up with Amelia - shortened often to Millie but a couple of her friends call her Mella - can't win!!

BIBIBOO · 29/04/2004 14:52

I am pg with 1st baby and intend to call it whatever I please. I know it can be helpful to get other people's opinions, but it only takes one negative one, or a "look" to put you off a name you've loved for ages. At the end of the day, as long as you give the baby a name you think they can live with, it won't matter. My friend has 3 unusual names for her babies which we didn't like at first, but just days after they were born we couldn't imagine them having any other name. Just go with what you like and think is right and hope your child thanks you for it in the end!

Toots · 29/04/2004 18:56

I'm in the tell them made up rubbish for horrified looks that turn to smiles brigade.

Hence my 2nd child will be Sonia or Lionel.

Toots · 29/04/2004 18:57

Although Boris or Doris is good. Arthur or Martha I genuinely like although connotations a go-go....

eidsvold · 29/04/2004 19:06

being an aussie in the UK - one i used to say is that we could not imagine calling our babe anything other than bruce or sheila or maybe Kylie.... some strange looks which gave me a smile.

Lesley76 · 30/04/2004 10:37

Or you could err on the side of caution and have a trendy first name and a more traditional middle name(s). Like Tex's Tobias John. Or Prufrock's Sebastian James. Then your child has a choice when they are older - do they want to be cool or unusual (like their parents obviously want them to be!!!)or boring and conventional.......

Tinker · 30/04/2004 10:47

I knew a Horace married to a Doris

thenewkidintown · 30/04/2004 11:32

In order to shorten the list of possibilities, we decided that both our children should have Welsh names only. We chose from just one book, and it was quite easy, really. Perhaps because I got to choose the name they're known by. After seeing me in labour for hours, dh thought I'd earned the right to make the final choice! ;o

mrscrankyangrylady · 30/04/2004 11:35

i know of a mabel - people really try hard with names now, don't they?

StripyMouse · 30/04/2004 11:42

My mate just named her little lad Wilfred with Biggles as his middle name 9her 4 year old DD chose the middle name as a deal done to make her feel more involved that they felt obliged to go through with...) Poor little thing - I have a feeling that their efforts to incl. his big sister might back fire when he gets old enough to "thank" her for her contribution!!

Tinker · 30/04/2004 12:33

I had a gerbil called Wilfred. His 'wife' was called Winifred. When they had babies, he then mated with his daughters. Then they ate them.

Isn't Tracy whotshername's (went to America, rich, showed eth Simpsons first on her show) daughter called Mabel? Or Julie Walters'? Or both?

Janh · 30/04/2004 12:46

Ullman. Julie Walters's is Maisie, dunno about Tracy's.
