Im new to Mumsnet and have never posted before but here we go!

Im 14 weeks pregnant with my 2nd child and have been really struggling with acid reflux, i never had any of this in my first pregnancy and have been to my GP who prescribed Gaviscon which just makes me feel sick has anyone else had this problem and any suggestions that may help??

Ive been on the sick from work with this for the past 2 weeks i do feel guilty about being on the sick but as i work as a nurse and do 13 hour shifts was really struggling with long shifts whilst having acid reflux so any suggestions that may help would be great!!

Is it the peppermint or aniseed stuff you got? The aniseed stuff is nasty IMO but the peppermint was great.

If it's the consistency making you sick you can try whole milk, Love Heart sweets (loads of people swear by them) or yoghurt. Smile

The GP can also prescribe ranitidine or omeperazole which are different kinds of antacids, go back if gaviscon isn't helping x

Love heart sweets I'm not sure why but they work! I think it's the chalky texture maybe?

carbolicsoaprocked · 25/03/2015 19:26

A mug of warm milk.

Get back to the GP and ask them to prescribe Omeprazole instead. It basically turns off the production of stomach acid (I think). Anyway: it's the bollocks! MUCH more effective than gaviscon

BotBotticelli · 25/03/2015 19:53

And it's just a tablet you take once a day so there's no drinking vile liquid

CanISayOfHerFace · 25/03/2015 19:57

I hated gaviscon but it did work for me. Although mine got progressively worse so I did go to the GP for something else. I got a "No one said pregnancy was easy" for my trouble Hmm

CanISayOfHerFace · 25/03/2015 20:01

Also certain things made mine worse... Garlic, tomato based sauces, chocolate, eating too late. Maybe see if there's anything you can cut out to help.

tobysmum77 · 25/03/2015 21:29

omeprazole is the way forward op

Thank you for all your advice i'll stick with the gaviscon for a few more days and if not change i will go back to GP.

Will try the love heart sweets though I've never heard that helps before!!

Yeah i too have found certain foods are worse spicy foods and foods that have rich sauces on are a big no go at the min!!

Thanks for advice everyone!!

I'm off at the minute with exactly the same thing. I'd been struggling along with gaviscon and rennies, went to the Gp who prescribed ranitidine - within 20 minutes my heartburn had lifted. I wish I'd gone weeks ago!
