telling colleagues

Have told my manager already and was planning to keep secret for a little while longer from everyone, but I have a definite bump and need to change to maternity asap, how did you tell colleagues, email or just let them work it out?

I felt really awkward telling colleagues, as I'm part-time I asked my manager to spread the word on one of my days off so I didn't have to!

Asap for 2 staff members who needed to know for h&s. Just told others now at 15 weeks.

I told two close colleagues and my secretary face to face at around 14 weeks. I emailed my bosses in the US. I figured everyone else didn't need to know and would cotton on in time anyway. There was no way I was making a big announcement.

Told my boss early on (6/7 weeks?) as had a scare, then told others after my 12 week scan - took the pics in. There was a lot of squealing (very girly office!).

My manager did a big announcement at the team brief to tell everyone for my 1st pregnancy. However, no one had told him that one of the team members' wife had just suffered the loss of their long awaited baby :-(

2nd time around I told no one except my direct line manager and
Occ Health and asked them to keep it secret as it was a higher risk pregnancy, most people noticed when by the time I got to about 28 weeks and some never did .

It was quite funny to see who was brave enough to ask a woman if she is pregnant.

Thanks for responses I am fairly new there, 15 weeks (and I am also 15 weeks pregnant) but I previously knew a lot of the people there, if had been there longer wouldve bought cakes and sent email round, hence confusion now.

I don't know how to do this either - I will be 12 weeks on Fri and have a scan next Wed so I think I might tell work after the scan. I will tell my boss first and then I will probably tell 2 girls at work who are my friends and then my colleague in my team. Making an announcement would not be something that would happen here but I would also feel weird telling the people I am less close to - but then would feel weird not telling them because I would get fat and they would probably never mention it and then neither would I and it would all get a bit odd!

One of my colleagues guessed and I confirmed to her an a couple of others that were in. Then the rest were told after my 12 week scan, and I just let my colleague announce it :)

I told a couple of close colleagues and asked them to spread the news whilst I was annual leave!

I told HR early on as I was due to travel abroad but then my manager once i reached 12 wks along with some people that I am closer too.
Generally I have either let them find out by word of mouth (as when some found out they took it upon themselves to tell others) and the rest I'm waiting for them to figure it out.
Not everyone needs to know if you don't want them too especialy if it will have no impact on them.
I'm cruel I quite enjoy watching people try to figure it out and see if they are brave enough to ask even when it gets pretty obvious

I told my HoD immediately at the start of the academic year because of the implications for admin roles and teaching planning, my closest friend on the staff guessed but didn't ask, and I just told other people piecemeal after about 20 weeks.

I told my boss very early as I'd just had a miscarriage and was having bleeding again, and asked him to keep it secret. The coworker I'm close to figured it out shortly after, but I told her that because of what had happened before, I didn't want to tell anyone at all, or to talk about it, until 12 weeks, and she was fine with that.

Last week, at about 20 weeks, the bump had popped out so much that suddenly everyone knew!

I have been wondering this for ages. I had to tell my boss at around 6/7 weeks as I was so tired it was effecting my work. I did tell another pregnant lady at work for advise and asked how she did it as she's so quiet, can't imagine her making a scene. She said she brought her 12 scan pic in and quietly showed it to her colleagues around her and news spread. This is how I'll do it -easy and swift

Told boss very early on (sworn to secrecy!) then a couple of close colleagues at 12w. Dating scan was late, about 15w, so kept it quiet from rest of office till then - put my next midwife appointment in the shared diary and stopped wearing clothes to hide bump - took another couple of weeks for some folk to work it out though!

I am a teacher so told the head at 7 weeks as I felt shocking and needed a bit of leeway. There was a bit of pressure to tell certain members of staff as they wanted to employ a temp member of staff to do my mat leave but she had an interview coming up.
In the end I had my scan at 14 weeks (on the mon) and her interview was on the wed. Went back to school said everything is ok go and ask her if she wants the job. So then the cat was out of the bag. Showed my immediate colleagues the scan pic and the news filtered out from there. The news was shared fully by the head the following week after checking it was ok with me.

Do the same role as me at about 18. I hated it although my direct report was so lovely he had pretty much the best reaction of anyone I told, but a co worker was struggling with infertility and I don't think I'll forget the look on her face

I told my boss at 15 weeks as was under a lot of work stress and needed him to lay off me a bit for the sake of the pregnancy! However if I got on well with my boss I'd tell them after 13 week scan.

I told my assistant at 10wks as I needed her to cover a work trip abroad. Told my line manager face to face at 22wks after scan and emailed the rest of my team immediately to let them know id be taking maternity leave this year. I let everyone else guess, although some didn't cotton on til very late (30wks!)
