Sleeping Positions

Hi all! Hope you're all well!

Quick question about sleeping positions (I am sure there has been threads on this previously, but I couldn't see one)...

I am currently 19 weeks and although I keep trying to sleep in my left hand side, I often wake up on my stomach or on my back - is this dangerous? My bump isn't huge, but big enough to feel squashed when I am aware of being on my belly, just wondering if anyone has any advice or tips?

Thank you! Smile

Hi OMC1! I don't really have any advice I'm afraid but I too go to sleep on my side and wake up nearly every morning lying on my back (I'm 17wks). I hope that if it was a problem my body would wake me up with pain or pins and needles or something?

You can't really help it if you're rolling over in your sleep Smile

I was confused about this too and asked at a consultant appointment. The reason prolonged lying on your back is generally to be avoided is because the weight of the baby can press on a major blood vessel running down the spine, potentially restricting blood flow to you and the baby. But the consultant also said a) this isn't really an issue until you're 6 months pregnant, the baby's not big enough til then, b) If your blood supply was restricted you would know about it - you'd get short of breath, dizzy and c) try to go to sleep on your left, but don't worry about moving around at night and if you wake up in another position.

I don't think there's any risks as such from sleeping on your front, it's just it will become uncomfortable and pretty much impossible as you get bigger.

If it really worries you a special pillow will keep you in place. Although for me left handed sleeping is coming with incredible hip pain...
