Did it take you 6 months or more to conceive?

Have been ttc for 6 months now with no joy, getting more and more miserable. We've had a few tests and no obvious issues.

I'm curious to know if taking 6 months or more to conceive is actually fairly normal or whether I am already at the point where it's going to mean assisted conception for us. Does anyone have any encouraging stories of taking 6 months or more to get there but getting pregnant naturally in the end?

Thanks.

TTC #1 took 9 months and conceived naturally. #2 took 6 months.

It's so difficult not to become down heartened as each month passes. Both times I conceived when my mind was occupied with other things, I wasn't focused on my cycle and had stopped reading the MN boards. Good luck!

I was quicker but 2 good friends took 8-9 months without assistance. The friends who needed assistance all took longer than a year before trying anything else.

Thanks everyone. It's so frustrating not knowing what is going wrong - is the sperm even meeting the egg? Is the egg being fertilised but not implanting? I haven't had a miscarriage or a chemical so no indications at all about how far we've got.

I take solace from the fact that I have a gay friend who had IUI twice and that didn't work. (The significance of her being gay is that she wasn't having the IUI because of fertility issues and the sperm was top quality). She conceived third time round.

So if conception can fail even when absolutely everything is being done right and with max precision, perhaps not that suprising that we don't hit target that frequently when doing it the old-fashioned way.

The first one yes. I'd been on the pill for a long tim. It took 9 months to fall pregnant and felt like torture every time aunt Flo showed up or I got a negative test. I'd just gotten to a point of thinking it was never going to happen and there had to be something wrong with me and it happened. He's 7 now Smile

I've got 4, am cooking number 5 and every time since has been first time.

First time yes. Lots of dtd and charts., 7 months in total. Second time it took 2 months with occasional dtd and no charts.

Pixa · 16/03/2015 07:19

I just wanted to pop by and say you're not alone. We are now on cycle seven. I am 24, haven't been on the pill ar any other hormonal contraception, always used barrier methods. DH and I got married last year and started TTC on our wedding night. I knew it may not happen straight away, but I definitely thought I would be pregnant before now.

We aren't charting, or anything like that, but we did buy some pre-seed to give that a go.

It's extremely disheartening, but I have faith that we will get there. It's just not happening right now for us.

MissTwister · 16/03/2015 07:20

Took 7 months - the month we got pregnant though I conceived on day 10 it turned out! We'd been focusing on 12-15 as my period is a normal 28 days - 30 day cycle. So I'd suggest not assuming you're ovulating on day 14!

scarednoob · 16/03/2015 07:22

Lots and lots of my friends took up to a year and they had no problems, just took a few months. According to one of the pregnancy books I read, sometimes even when the sperm and the egg are both fine, for some unknown reason they just don't fuse as they need to, so it doesn't work that month. Fingers crossed for you next time! X

hestialou · 16/03/2015 07:23

Took 12 months, but ended in mc, then 1month and pregnant again, now 13 weeks. Started using balance activ in month 12, and when we tried after mc. Maybe worth trying?

JessieMcJessie · 16/03/2015 07:26

Thanks ladies. Feeling a bit better now Smile. Miss Twister, I've been using OPKs since the first cycle so am working on the basis that I ovulate after I get a positive OPK. Tend to DTD every other day from day 12 to the day after the positive OPK (at the beginning we were managing once a day in that window but that enthusiasm waned a long time ago).

Pixa hope this thread is helpful to you too then. Good luck!

Yes 14 months for DC1(after long time on pill)
DC2 and DC3 both times very easily!!
I do feel for you .Good luck.

cathpip · 16/03/2015 07:30

I took 12 months to conceive dc3, thought I was broken as I fell pregnant after 2 months with dc1 and 2.

nippey · 16/03/2015 07:31

It took us 10 months (now 26 weeks) I think we were getting the timing wrong, the first month i used the clear blue digital from Mumsnet trial I got my BFP.
Good luck, I hope you get good news soon.

MissTwister · 16/03/2015 07:53

My clear blue digital told me I ovulated on the 13th day then decided I wasn't ovulating at all. I was as was confirmed by 21 day test and then getting pregnant. It was just Day 10!

skyra13 · 16/03/2015 07:54

Took 8 months for me after coming off the mini pill, we stopped trying after 6 months and just went with the flow if it happened it happened an it did after a drunk camping trip in the woods lol

SoftSheen · 16/03/2015 07:58

TTC 1 - 10 months, conceived on a day when in theory I shouldn't have been fertile

TTC 2 - 1 month (one attempt!)

icklekid · 16/03/2015 07:58

Took over 6 months - think it is common and sadly I believe you have to wait nearer 2 years before looking at assisted conception!

usernamefeefifoe · 16/03/2015 08:01

Hi. I am 35 my partner is 38. I stopped taking the pill in Jan 2013. we were trying but in a very relaxed way. By the end of that year I decided to go to my gp. He arranged blood tests for me which all came back normal. The next suggestion was hoty husband to have a semen analysis which we were trying to arrange, the nearest hosp for it was over an hour away and only did the test on specific days. Anyways this was bringing us to mid 2014. on August 2014 I took a test and it was positive. So it took us 18 months after stopping the pill to conceive naturally. My gp wasn't going to start any interventions until we we're trying for 2 years. I am now 4 weeks away from my due date.

Spatial · 16/03/2015 08:01

First time pg within 3 months - MMC
Second time pg within 3 months - DC1
Third time pg within 1 year - MMC
Fourth time pg within 6 months - DC2

Over 35 from the start

TheChristmasTreeFairy · 16/03/2015 08:03

DC1 was a total accident
DC2 was conceived the second month of trying
DC3 took 13 months. That was a shock. I do have PCOS but had been diagnosed pre children and wasn't eligible for any medical help as I had previously had children without issues. It was an extremely frustrating time

MyraForum · 16/03/2015 08:07

It took us 9 months, which was 11 cycles. It was heartbreaking, we'd waited years to start trying, and all 3 of my best friends got pregnant within that time.

Currently feeding 9week old dd, who is worth every minute of the wait.

All the best for your bfp
