20 week scan

Hello, We have just been for our 20 week scan and whilst the sonographer didn't seem to think there was any problems she couldn't get a clear enough picture of the heart so we need to go back but for another scan which is now booked for another 18 days time. Is this normal to wait nearly 3 more weeks? I don't think I can stomach waiting that long as the last 8 weeks seemed like an eternity. I think I am also gutted as we couldn't get any pictures due to the position the baby was lying in :(

It does happen that they can't get good views so can't "complete" the scan then and there. As there isn't anything time critical at this point (unlike NT) then they will fit you in when they have space. Try and put it out of your head, most cardiac anomalies are quite obvious and of course are rare.

I would take it at face value, that the baby was in a unfavourable position. I think if there had been anything truly amiss she would have said so, or intimated. Relax, and wait, pregnancy is not an exact science, and I am sure all will be well.

Could you possibly afford a private scan in the baby feels like it's moved?

Whatabout · 13/03/2015 19:24

If you are really worried you could book a private scan or to see your midwife to discuss things? Sorry you are so nervous, I'm seeing a mental health midwife because of my extreme anxiety and receiving cbt, perhaps worth a discussion?

If it makes you feel any better I reckon if there was anything wrong they'd get you in quicker, so having a wait is probably a good sign Smile

We had a second scan at 23 weeks because baby was hiding her face. That was the soonest we could get/both attend

Thanks all. We did look at the possibility of a private scan but the earliest date available is the same day as the scan date we have been given. I know I am probably over reacting but I just know I will be worrying about this until the scan and I have a stressful couple of weeks coming up at work, so I just dread the thought of the waiting.

The waiting must be so hard but as others have said I would take it at face value. If the sonographer had serious concerns you would have been asked to come back sooner. Two friends have had bad news at scans and it was very obvious from the get go that something was seriously wrong- no waiting for three weeks.
It could be worth ringing your mw/ hospital to try and push for an earlier scan though. My 12 week scan was late for various reasons and they couldn't do the nt test. It was stressful so when my 20 week scan came back a bit late too my mw said I could try to get it moved. I didn't in this case but there must be some wriggle room or she wouldn't have suggested it IYSWIM.

The thing with private scans is that you need to book a particular scan as not all those offered are diagnostic. 18 days really isn't that long to wait having just done 8 weeks :)

This exact same thing happened to us 5 weeks ago (25 weeks now) we had to go back in 2 weeks to check the heart, face and spine because baby was very curled up, I was stressing the entire time but apparently it's quite normal, we went back 3 weeks ago and everything was fine baby had moved up so everything was checked and we got 3 brilliant pictures and found out we're having another little girl! Don't worry about it too much it doesn't mean anything is wrong, have a lovely pregnancy Smile

At my 20wk scan the sonographer noted that babys legs were short in comparison to everything else, something like 5th percentile or something I think. So he said it could either mean baby isn't growing properly, or that he's going to be a small baby. So we have to go back next week which will be 24wks for another scan to recheck growth.

I was worried at first, but then realised if it was a major problem he would have made more of a deal of it. So I'm sure it's nothing to worry about, but understand it's hard not to think about x
