Hand Sanitiser? Safe?

Hello ladies...

I don't know how silly this questions is but here goes...

I use hand sanitiser all of the time.. mainly wilko's instant hand sanitiser, and noticed today how strongly it smelt and upon looking noticed it has alcohol in. That got me curious so I googled it and there seems to be a lot of varying opinions on whether it is safe or not.. A lot of people bitching about why the poster uses it so much "what's wrong with good old soap and water" so please don't say that Grin I work with drug addicts, alcoholics, and not very nice people who share our toilets, as well as a café down stairs whose elder customers leave faeces all over... So I try to avoid the toilets at all costs and don't believe washing my hands in there will do my any good when the handle on the way out could be covered in god knows what!!!

Anyway...

Has anyone been given professional advice as to whether hand sanitiser is safe to use frequently? I have read alcohol based is ok.. but if it contains something beginning with T to avoid...

I'm not sure what the T ingredient is but rest assured in the maternity wards, the delivery wards and neo natal etc there is hand sanitiser everywhere. The advice though is that you thoroughly wash your hands and then use hand sanitiser. The ones all over the hospital here are cutan but it's just a brand, again alcohol based.
You should ask your hr person for a risk assessment for your job though if you feel you are at particular risk from contracting something while pregnant.

Hi thanks for the reply flippity yeah that's what I was thinking, it had never even crossed my mind before! Unfortunately where I work at the moment couldn't give 2 hoots about anything like that. I am currently looking for a new job as this lace will never change, and its such a small firm if I kick up a fuss it will only bite me I the bum. I am also only 4+5 and don't plan on telling them until as late as possible thanks to a bad experience with them after mc.

I'm sure it's fine

Your employers have to give a hoot about a maternity risk assessment you know? It isn't optional. I understand you don't want to disclose this early, but. Look after yourself until you do, and be clear about your rights.

Hospitals particularly maternity units have encouraged the use of hand sanitizer for years, I would imagine if there was any issues with it then it would have been stopped by now. Also you need at least 65% alcohol content to kill the bugs, some do stink though. I’ve heaved a few times in shops not expecting them to stink as bad as they do
