Tips on settling restless legs?

Hello, any tips or suggestions and dealing with restless legs in the evening?

After working all day I would love to be able to sit on the sofa after my DD is in bed and just relax but as soon as I do my legs just twitch and feel like I need to kick them out and stretch the muscles.

Any suggestions of what to try gratefully received!

I have no idea, but I have the same problem so am following!

I've not tried it myself, but a friend who wore flight socks and swore they helped with the twitchy feeling.

Things that work for me:

Get up and walk a bit

Keeping your legs cool helps.

Also keep legs and feet as free as possible, ie don't wear several layers of tight clothing or boots etc. Having my toddler sitting on my lap using my legs as a slide or seesaw really makes it worse for me.

Avoid caffeine in the evening

If you are tired or sleepy, go to sleep. My legs get really restless when I'm falling asleep but trying to keep myself awake.

And finally... if you want to kick and wriggle, do! It does feel a bit better

I used to put cold flannels on mine am 12wks preggo with #3 and had forgotten about this until your post. Tits I did a birth prep programme (hypnobirthing) and found the techniques I learnt in that really helped. Have also heard that bananas might help. Worth a try even though I have no idea how or why they might help

I've suffered from restless leg syndrome for years. I always get slight aches to start with then they increase till I have to kick out. I get it in my arms too. when I get the warning aches I apply a hot water bottle and find it stops it progressing and getting worse

youlemming · 11/03/2015 21:29

Thanks, I will give it all a go!

I am guilty of not always talking my boots off so will try and get into a routine of taking them off when I get in.

The flannels sound good and I never resist having a good wriggle Grin

Try eating bananas.

I suffer from this when I'm not pregnant and being pregnant is really making it worse so I feel your pain.
When watching tv I stretch my legs out on a foot stool which really helps.
It mainly happens when I'm tired so I take it as a sign that it's time to go to bed too!

You need iron supplements. I was like this in both my pregnancies because I was borderline anaemic. Hope it stops soon!

BiscuitMillionaire · 12/03/2015 10:14

Definitely try iron. When I had restless legs I spent hours trawling through the internet to see what is actually proven to work, and iron is one of the options. And it worked for me.

Yes it really does work quickly!
