Holiday abroad- safe food?

Would love to go on holiday before our baby is due but I'm not sure about the good safety having already had food poisoning once this pregnancy!
Looking at Cyprus 5star ai with good reputation usual buffet style and some fresh prep- fine- but what about the cheeses and salads? Obviously the local ladies eat with no problems but I assume the feta etc isn't pasteurised and I'm getting confused about it all
Do not want to run Ito Brit abroad and usually love the fresh fish and salad but also don't want to take silly risks
Anyone been there before? Views?
Will be 20 weeks

I think feta is OK isn't it? I had to google it last week as really wanted some and it said OK. If you are really worried then maybe just avoid salads and stick to meat and cooked veg. I definitely wouldn't avoid going on holiday because of worries about food, I'm sure you'll be fine.

Oh my goodness 7 replies, I'm so sorry! It wasn't posting so I clicked a few times and then it sent them all!

I have just been away and went self catering to avoid any possible food poisoning issues.

Although I did have some spotting at 7 weeks abroad which caused me a minor melt down. Came back, had a scan and all is fine so far - phew!

I think anyone who goes abroad whilst pregnant has a few worries. It's just a case of minimising the risk and going anyway.

Overall I think the holiday was very therapeutic and relaxing. Definitely required during pregnancy Wink

We did Cyprus 5* when I was 16 weeks with DS1. We went to the Elysium near Pathos and it was fab. Food was lovely and really not much I chose not to eat off the gigantic amazing buffets! (I'm a bit hungry thinking of it!)

Absolutely loads of choice, I really wouldn't worry, you're much more likely to pick up something here.

Stayed at Alfred the great in Paphos....I was pregnant at the time. Struggled with the food there and ate out most nights. Cost us a fortune.

I'd avoid

I'm having the same worries as I'm off to Tenerife next month and I'll be 17 weeks. It's 5 star AI but still not sure whether I need to avoid salad/milk/cheese/yoghurts/fruit juice/fruit unless peelable. Very confused.

Aridane · 12/03/2015 07:56

So it looks like feta is fine??

Haha

HazleNutt · 12/03/2015 08:54

Cyprus or Tenerife are not exactly third world and it's very unlikely a 5* (or any) hotel there would bother to serve unpasteurized milk. And as long as the fruit is washed, I can't think of anything risky about eating that either.
