Just that really? Can I dye my hair while pregnant? Or more specifically bleach it?

Thanks x

I think you can but are beat to wait until after 12 weeks

NancyRaygun · 11/03/2015 12:57

It depends I think: Will it be highlights? Fine. Or a head full of bleach all over up to the roots? Considered possibly not fine.

According to my pregnancy app to be ultra safe you shouldn't dye to the roots in case it is absorbed through the scalp and should dye in a well ventilated room etc

Have a look online as there are lots of links but PERSONALLY I am of the opinion that as there has been no evidence to the contrary dying your hair will be absolutely fine.

applecore0317 · 11/03/2015 12:57

It's personal preference from what I am aware.

I have chosen not to, because my hair is extremely temperamental when hormones kick in, it was when I was on the mini pill, and because of this I don't know how it would react to dye or bleach, so have decided to leave it.

scarednoob · 11/03/2015 12:58

i'm desperate to dye mine, the grey is horrific.

i have also read that after 12 weeks is probably safer; whilst they don't think it does any harm, they can't definitely say it doesn't. but apparently pure henna/vegetable dyes are fine, so i might buy one of those and get my hairdresser to put it on instead of the usual ammonia-rife stuff!

MetallicInk · 11/03/2015 13:10

It's normally the full head of peroxide blonde then white toner. Confused

I'm interested in this too as my roots are terrible! I actually resorted to a root touch up quick box colour at the weekend as a temporary measure. I figured this had to be better than the usual sitting at the hairdressers for an hour with dye on to nuke the grey.

Opinion seems divided, or inconclusive. I read up in the Emily Ostler expecting better book and it points to the fact that it should be fine, especially after the first trimester

MissTwister · 11/03/2015 13:54

be careful though - i did a patch test, with I never bother with normally and came up really itchy instantly. I don't think I can dye it!

sianihedgehog · 11/03/2015 14:13

The NHS say it's fine. Do a patch test first, though, as your immune system goes whacky and you may suddenly react when you haven't before.

Bleaching hasn't been linked to many problems outside of pregnancy, but black and red dyes have occasionally been implicated as possible carcinogens, and are more likely to cause an allergic reaction, so I'd be more careful of those.

And if you're worried, wait until after 12 weeks, as things are much less likely to go wrong at that stage.

Fwiw, I've just done a full head bleach at 18 weeks.

WorryWurta · 11/03/2015 16:10

My GP and hairdresser both said foils were fine in the first trimester so I had mine done at 7 weeks. But it's whatever you feel comfortable with.

Cisforcat · 11/03/2015 19:38

I had mine done all through my pregnancy and no one ever mentioned it as a problem and DD is just fine!

ExcitedA3 · 11/03/2015 20:56

I asked my midwife this 2 weeks ago and she said it's an old wives tale. She said it's perfectly safe to dye your hair, just let the salon know so they can keep you somewhere well ventilated!

I would say it's safe, I did it through both pregnancies and didn't have any issues however as someone mentioned be aware you may react differently than when not pregnant so worth doing a patch test. Also I was told that colour may take differently when pregnant, even if using same brand and shade as normal. This didn't happen to me so I'm just saying what someone told me rather than personal experience.

squizita · 11/03/2015 21:54

Safe for baby.
For you, 1st trimester, you might get a skin reaction. That's why many choose to wait.

LittlePeasMummy1 · 11/03/2015 22:40

Here's a leaflet. Hope you find it helpful www.medicinesinpregnancy.org/Medicine--pregnancy/Hair-dye/

lmb21010 · 12/03/2015 00:02

Dyed mine tonight! Ok it's purple not blonde but still! From what I've read and asked a hairdresser friend, it doesn't put baby at risk, your reaction may be different. And make sure it's a well ventilated area. X

Thank you for all your help ladies. Roots are badly needing done but I'm sure I can wait a few weeks yet.
