When Was Your First MW Appointment? - (( After MC ))

Hello,

I have recently found out I am pregnant, 4 months after mmc in October. I am just over 4 weeks. I have called the MW office today and they have booked me in for 20th April!! I will be just over 10w. We want an early scan this time due to last baby dying at 6w and we didn't find out until 10w. I don't want to get to 12w scan to find out something has gone wrong. However, I thought I would see MW at about 7 weeks (I did last time). I was going to inform her at the appointment that we would be having a scan so they knew... now what do I do? Does the private clinic inform them or do I just tell her when I see her at 10w? I am also stressing that the appointment feels so far away! So when did/do you ladies have your first appointment?

Just tell her when you see her. I'd had 2 scans due to bleeding (plus a previous miscarriage) before my first MW appointment at 8 weeks. I just told her and she wrote it into my notes.
I also had a private viability scan, nuchal scan and Harmony test before my next appointment at 16 weeks. The private clinic gave me a printed letter addressed to my doctors or midwife with the results of the scans and tests which the MW added to my notes.

Yes you just tell your midwife that you've had a scan - they will probably give you a report you can give to your MW but she likely won't file it. That early scan is just for your own reassurance.

NHS standard for booking is 8-10 weeks. I hadn't had a miscarriage but I had a lot of bleeding and serial scans in the first trimester. I actually chose booking at 10 weeks because I wanted it to be as late as possible. I didn't want to go through the excitement of an early booking and receiving my notes for something to go wrong soon afterwards iyswim.

It will be a private scan so I wasn't sure what happens. That's great though thanks for the help!

aww Bue yeah I do see. I think I was just having a mini panic due to first mw appointment being at 7 weeks with mc, and 10 weeks this time felt like she may as well have said 10 years lol. I didn't know its normally 8-10 weeks so feel better knowing that's normal. Did you still get your 12 week scan on time or was it later?

I had a private scan before seeing my midwife for the first time. I had the same - MMC, 10 weeks, baby had died at 6 weeks. I had a scan at 8 weeks (everything fine so far!) and then saw the midwife a few days later.

Aww thanks Gooo that's very reassuring! I am on edge worrying about mmc and I just want some reassurance earlier than 12 weeks!

I can understand completely why you want an early scan. Once you've seen a heartbeat at 8 weeks you've a 98% chance of carrying to term so it has put my mind at rest a bit, although I am now 11 weeks and this is still the slowest 12 weeks in history! I have my NHS scan next week.

Good luck!

Amyyy27 · 09/03/2015 11:13

Oh I didn't know that, that's a great statistic! Thank you very much :) and good luck with your scan!

Hiya, I saw you on the other thread. My first MW appointment was at 10 weeks. I have had a previous MC. The MW won't do anything at your booking in, especially if you have only had one MC unless you have any signs that something is wrong. If you have pain or bleeding then you can be referred to your EPAU.

I KNOW how hard these weeks are. They drag on forever and are full of gut wrenching fear.

If you think you will feel better with a private scan then try to wait until 8 weeks and go for it. I decided against it this time because last time I paid £100 in a room full of baby pictures to be told I was miscarrying. I couldn't risk going through that again so managed to wait until 12 weeks. It wasn't easy. Good luck

Remember the odds are in your favour xxx

Aww Happy sorry to hear of the mc. Thank you very much for the advice. We have agreed to go for an 8 week scan and keep mw appointment at 10w to sort of break up the waiting time. I know now my body is capable of not detecting a mc so I would rather know sooner than later iykwim, I would find it harder to be told the bad news at 12w than 8w. I know everyones different though so I understand why you waited. Thank you :) xxx

After 2 mc we had our booking apt about 8/9 weeks and first scan at 12 weeks on NHS. Then saw midwife again at 16 weeks and next scan at 20 weeks. They will not scan here early as there is nothing they can do at that stage. Hard to hear. So we paid £60 for private early scan. To be fair it did not help as was so early and I still worried until 12 week scan.

All the best.

Yep, still had scan on time! That was the only thing I was slightly concerned about but in fact I had it at 12 weeks on the dot, so well within the time frame Smile
