Hi, I went out for a family meal last night and order chicken breast with bearnaise sauce not realising this is something you shouldn't eat during pregnancy! I am 13 weeks and 4 days and am now worried something maybe wrong. Please can anyone help :-)

I really wouldn't worry, the concern with bearnaise sauce is that it contains raw egg and the problem with raw egg is that it could cause salmonella but this is very unlikely. Pregnant women are told to avoid as as they may be more susceptible due to lower immune systems and if they do get salmonella then it might not be great for the baby. Now I may be wrong with this but I think that you would know by now if you had salmonella so I think you're fine. I really wouldn't worry as the chances of there being a problem by eating the sauce are tiny.

Don't worry. It's extremely unlikely anything is wrong. Raw eggs are the issue in the sauce, and firstly the majority of eggs are vaccinated against salmonella anyway and secondly salmonella would make you very ill rather than directly affect the baby. If you don't have any symptoms of food poisoning by now, then you should be fine.

If you had salmonella you would know about it. Most eggs in this country are from chickens vaccinated against salmonella so the risks are minimal. I chose to eat runny eggs when I was pregnant as the risks are so low and the protein is good!
