Ovarian cyst on scan

Hi ladies,

I ended up in hospital today due to dehydration from my endless barfing. Was rehydrated and happy to say I'm feeling sooooo much better as a result.

Also had a scan while I was there. First time I've seen the bean and it measured perfectly and had a good strong heartbeat.

Anyway, the reason she scanned me was I have been having some pain low on the right and she found a cyst on my ovary. It isn't massive, about 4.5 cm by 3, and it seemed to be totally dark on the scan, with no cloudy matter or thickened wall... It was, however, quite painful on palpation.

She didn't seem overly concerned about it but she did measure and have a very good look. She didn't speak English and my swedish is crap so I wasn't able to ask the questions I normally would.

Has anyone experience of this? Did it persist through the pregnancy or go away? Any issues or complications/twisting? Be happy to hear of your experiences !

I have had ovarian cysts - I had them removed in 2010 as part of my infertility treatment. Before that I had a few episodes of agonising pain when they twisted and was taken to A&E for morphine. After the op the pain stopped although the recovery was horrible and much more debilitating than I'd anticipated.

I had an early scan for my current pregnancy the other week and they found another cyst. It's not been giving me any problems though - no pain - and the docs will be inclined to leave it unless it starts to cause me issues. I suspect the same would be the same for you.

Possibly a corpus luteum cyst? I have had corpus luteums (lutae?!) which have gone cystic in both my successful pregnancies - the first time it caused me quite a bit of pain, but the second time it didn't cause me any. Both times it had disappeared on its own by 20 weeks.

Don't worry - I had 9cm ovarian cysts during two pregnancies. They weren't worried about it at all - but I got loads of extra scans which was lovely! I had mine removed a year after my second baby, but just because I could, not because I needed to. Sometimes pregnancy hormones can make it grow a bit, but unless it's over 10cm, there's no need to worry. Good luck with the pregnancy

Thanks!

How many extra scans did you have duckie?

I had two cysts at my 12 week scan roughly about the same size as you describe and they were gone by 20 weeks

I got an extra at 16 weeks and again at 28 or 32... can't remember which!

I had one at 12 weeks, same size as yours. By my 20 week scan it had pretty much gone. The sonographer at my 12 week scan said in most cases they will just diminish and aren't a major cause for concern.

I had an early scan and the gynaecologist said that I have a very impressive 'corpus luteum' and asked me if it was in a lot of pain.

Didn't even notice it was there and whn I went for my 12 week scan it wasn't even mentioned.

Ilovenannyplum · 10/03/2015 08:34

I had one found at my 12 week scan, it was about the size of a snooker ball, I had a private sexing scan at 17 weeks and it had shrunk and then by the 20 week NHS scan it had pretty much gone completely

TakesTwoToTango · 10/03/2015 09:29

I had one about the same size as yours in my last pg. mine was a corpus luteal cyst and the private sonographer said actually it is a good thing as its the corpus luteum that secretes the hormones to sustain the pg until the placenta takes over. Mine was gone by 20weeks but a bit uncomfy in the first trimester.

My left ovary was completely cystic when I had DD in 2007

At my 8 week scan this time round they said the left side was clear, but there was a cyst on the right side. Nothing mentioned at 12 week scan.
I asked again at 20 week scan last week and she said I was totally cyst free.

She said they can come and go, but if they are seen they will monitor them.

Try not to worry Smile
