What size baby clothes for hospital bag?

Should I pack newborn size? My mother is adamant that I should not have bothered buying any clothes in this size to begin with, but aren't newborns - well, newborn sized? Should I pack a selection including larger sizes?

I'm only 25 weeks, so perhaps this is a bit soon but I was told it's a good idea to get prepared from 6months pregnant onwards and I am the sort who likes to be prepared for every eventuality.

Will the midwife tell me what weight baby to expect?

My girls were 8lb 1 and 8lb 11 and both fit in newborn for a while. I am only taking newborn for new baby too

DD was 9lb, very long and fit in newborn for the first few weeks. 0-3 would have swamped her. They do grow very quickly so you probably won't need tons of nb stuff but I would still buy some just for the first few weeks. I will be taking newborn sized to the hospital for DD2.

Mine was 7lb6 and 0-3 would have swamped him. Newborn was OK but some makes were massive and got both legs in one hole repeatedly(tesco OK, mamas and papa's good. M & Co the only place locally selling baby clothes are massive!!) Got a few smaller than newborn vests from boots that have been good.
Was handy having plenty of smaller clothes as there was plenty of dirty clothes and even washing every day would have been a pain if I had't got some more/sent my mum out for some!

I wish I had asked this question. I bought all my clothes from an NCT sale and had no idea there were sizes smaller than 0-3! DS at 6 weeks (with good weight gain) is only now just fitting into the clothes we took to hospital. My mother had to do an emergency shopping trip!

Unless your beloved nb baby does super booby-milk, explosive shits several times a day. Grin

My 9lb 13oz ds fitted fine into newborn stuff for a good month (after the initial weightloss), the 0-3 was massive on him. DS2 9lb 2oz also recently wore his newborn/up to 1 month clothes for a good 3 weeks, although despite being lighter he is longer than DS1 aas which definately has more of a bearing on clothes size. Id definately get a pack or two of newborn/up to one month clothes for the hospital bag and first few weeks.

We took newborn, 5lb 14oz DD looked ridiculous in them until about 8w. Tiny baby fitted her for ages - that was our first trip out, to buy some even smaller clothes! As others say it's the length as much as anything, though less of an issue if you're due in summer and get the romper suit style ones...

WhereIsMyFurryHat · 08/03/2015 18:56

Two of mine were 9lbs 7oz and both wore newborn (7lb+) clothes for at least two weeks. Saying that, sizes do vary a lot so it's worth doing comparisons with clothes from different places.

I was 12 days past my due date when my DD was born and she weighed 6lb 6oz. All the clothes we had brought to the hospital for her were too big (newborn and a few 0-3 bits) so my husband had to go out and buy some tiny baby vests and sleepsuits! :)

PenguinsandtheTantrumofDoom · 08/03/2015 23:10

newborn will fit most babies. But maybe only for a few days.

Lifeisabeach · 09/03/2015 07:18

I'm 38 weeks with DC3 and have packed newborn and up to 1 month sizes. I realised the newborn stuff I had from Next only goes up to 7lb 8, and their up to 1 month size is up to 10lb. So definitely worth checking the labels.

My other two were 7lb 4 and 7lb 3, so I might get a couple of weeks out of the Next newborn stuff if this one is a similar weight.

ThreeFrazzledFandangos · 09/03/2015 07:22

DS was 7lb 4oz and was drowned by newborn. He spent the first week in some hand-me-down tiny baby clothes.

He was in newborn for 7 weeks after that.

DilysDerwent · 09/03/2015 08:39

DS was 11lb 11oz so went straight into 0-3m. (He's now in a mix of 9-12m and 12-18m at nearly 6m...)
