Hi all,

Little bit of background I'm 31 weeks pregnant - it's a high risk pregnancy due to diabetis and medication I'm on

I had my last scan recently with the consultant and she seemed happy with eveything- however when I got home I reviewed my scan and was horrified to see my umbilical artery pi reading was very low 0.68 which when plotted on the graph they give you is just marginally below the lowest normal range

Now obviously I have no idea about these things- but surely anything slightly outside normal can't be good?! I rang my midwife and she basically fobbed me off, saying "if the consultant was happy with the scan then so was she!" Not very reassuring

They've booked me in for another 5 weeks follow up scan but surely that's too long to wait if there's a problem?!

Does anyone know about this? Can anyone shed any light? Thank u in advance

I'm no professional expert and someone may correct me if I'm wrong but I've looked up a lot about Doppler PI and RI measurements as I am having a high risk preg too.

My understanding is the PI is a measurement of the resistance to blood/(& nutrients?) flowing through the placenta and generally low is good, high resistance is bad ie. If there's too much resistance the baby might not get what it needs. So I wouldn't worry and try to trust that the consultant would have said something if there was an issue - are you seeing the dr again soon when you can ask them?

From my personal but non medical experience, it is high PI that is an issue. Mine is at top of chart and needs weekly scans from 29 weeks. Wish it was lower.

Thanks guys
Made me feel a little bit better - just don't understand why they have a normal low range then if low is better?!

It's all so confusing :(

My last PI was 0.79 ... asked about it as was worried and told the lower the better as it measures resistance ... I had a higher reading 4 weeks before at 28 weeks ... was told baby's position can affect the reading
